That's the best advice right there.Figure about $500 for hotel, $300 for registration and most events, and like $40 a day for food and other extra stuff, and you should be good. Realistically, you will probably spend less. Of course, you can get away spending much less, but I recommend participating in the events and eating at the restaurants. Oh, don't forget gas.
Like has been said for years, put about $20 a week in a shoebox, and you'll have most of the money you need.
I've been to 6 straight conventions, and on average they've run about $1000-$1200 each. Not a bad price for a week of fun, drunkenness and Canoodian ******...
