Shifting Problem(automatic)

My 99 SHO has a hesitation and vibration when it is shifting...

the vibration actually sounds like there is something on the tires... it is in sequence... i don't seem to have this problem if I am accelerating fast... it only happens when i am steadily accelerating... it haoppens in several different gears, not always in the same one...

if i lift up on the accelerator when it starts to vibrate/hesitate it will continue to do it, if i gun it, it will shift...

has anyone else had this problem and solved it????

You might start by having the trans filter changed. It made quite a difference in my shifting. Now, I am on a maintenance schedule of changing it every 15,000 miles or yearly.

yes but under that situation it is always at a point where it should be shifting...

It sounds like it could be torque convertor shutter. Possible feel like you are going over a rumble strip? it could be because of the fluid being regular mercon, or because it is needing changed. I would definatly start with a complete fluid change. Not just a filter change

talked to a transmission shop... he said the drum inside is probably cracked, releasing pressure and not allowing the trans. to shift... said this is a common problem for that transmission...$1,600-$2,000 to fix...

I am going ahead with the transmission flush first... he said if it is a crack that flushing will probably cause the problem to get worse... in any case I am going to get stranded along the road sometime if I don't do anything...

the car may be going up for sale or parted out soon

this is a common problem.
it's generally called "transmission torque converter shudder".
try this after your mercon V flush, pan drop, and filter change...

i'm ready to get a rebuild w/ shift kit myself. even though it shifts fine, bottom line...it's built for a Vulcan engine.

Flushing is bad....... atleast drop the pan first and get all that nasty stuff out and clean it up real good. I work at a transmission shop...

Id do that first before having it overhauled....

what I would do if this was my transmission................


Drop pan, inspect for a lot of black soot on bottom of pan, or metal in the pan. Both of those can mean the tranny is wearing out and/or could need an overhaul. Clean magnet off, clean inside pan so its shiny. If you don't have a reusable pan gasket try to find a Duraprene material one. Get a good quality filter, might cost you 40 bucks or so... Get 6 or 7 quarts of Mercon V transmission fluid. Install the new filter, make sure to pry out the old o-ring from inside the case if it didn't come off with the old filter. Make sure the new filter comes with a new one lol. it is a usually green piece for the taurus, about 1/2 tall or less that looks like threads around the outside. Reinstall pan, put in fluid..should take about 6 quarts, check fluid level.... I just wrote an awesome fluid level check how to in the gen1 driveline help forum under a thread no power in reverse.


now I say Mercon V but you might not need that. Check the dipstick.. either the top you grab onto will say mercon V or it might say it on the stick. It usually says "warranty requires use of mercon V" or it will say just plain mercon with no roman numeral in the middle part of the dipstick
