shifting issues

so earlier today had the sho in manual shift and it kept down shifting at slow speeds or just reving real high. put it in auto and was having problems with it not shifting out of first. just checked the ptu fluid and its not very dark but pulled a metal shaving out with first check. checked it a couple more times and no metal came out. could this be a serious issue?

In manual shift/sport/paddle etc mode, unless you hit the brake or the paddle, the gear should hold. Works fine when in Drive? As far as the shaving, fine shavings are normal and collect on the PTU plug by design. Pieces or chunks of any size would be BAD news.

How many miles on your SHO, have there been any electrical gremlins lately? Was the trans warmed up properly at the time you noticed these issues?

103k miles on it. car was completely warmed up. had been driving for 30+ minutes. it was a pretty fine shaved piece no chunk. when it was in drive (not paddle mode) is when it wouldn't shift out of first.

Possibly a transmission range sensor issue (TSB 13-5-27). A resistance check on the connector at the transmission should tell you if that is the issue or not. If the engine revs freely but you are not moving or the vehicle speed is unaffected, it could be a TSS/OSS sensor/valve body/solenoid body issue.

Internal issues do affect the trans from time to time, burnt clutches and failed torque converters being the most prominent, but ... let's hope for the best and simplest.
