Okay...assuming worse case senario. Shift fork or whatever bent/broken. Let's say the trans is in perfect condition aside from the obvious....would it be more worthwhile to fix or replace? And if so, you got a stock trans just kinda chillin out over there?

Fix it, absolutely worth the cost. I've got lots of parts but no whole transmissions unfortunately. There's bound to be a few in boneyards around Michigan somewhere, or maybe kzoo has one?

So it'd be cheaper for me to have the transmission ripped apart and whatever's broke replaced? I wouldn't even know what to tell the transmission shop if I took it to em. And how do I know what exactly needs replaced? I can't afford to have my car down for longer than two days...maybe three at the most.

Brian..how much would you part with one of them good trannys for?

I couldn't tell you what's wrong not having seen it. Things to check would be shift forks, shift shaft, synchros, blocking rings. Basically they'd need to inspect the whole thing.

Brian will PM you a price for a trans. Right Brian? ;)
(In other words, don't post a price in the thread.)

Went by max transmission yesterday and had them fiddle with it. Guy's pretty sure it's either a problem with the detent or the shift fork. He's leaning more towards a detent due to the problem being moving into the gate and not any particular gears......

well, thanks to my current financial situation, I'm basically gonna have to run it till it falls apart on me. Hopefully by then I'll have enough to get another tranny. How long can I expect it to keep going?

That's an impossible question to answer accurately. Could be 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months or even 3 years. I think one thing that will affect how long it has is how you drive it. If you keep forcing it into gear by banging on it, obviously it'll have less time. If you baby it you might get more out of it.

Keep an eye on your trans fluid also. Make sure that it stays fresh and clean. When you drain it keep an eye out for sparkles, the more sparkles you have means that things are getting really bad.

By the by, have you drained the fluid to see if you have any metal flakes in the fluid already?

No idea how to drain the fluid, but here's where it gets curioser and curiouser......

Lately, it's been colder than the proverbial pagan's breast out here.....and oddly enough, it's shifting almost normal again. There's still a little catching getting into 5th, but not NEARLY as bad as it was last week. Is my car telling me to move to a cold climate?????

Enlighten me...what's the easiest way to change the fluid? I'd be doing it in a driveway with basic hand tools. What do I need?

You need a catch basin, a 13mm 6 point socket, 3/8 ratchet & 2" extension, 3 quarts of trans fluid, a funnel and long tube and some teflon tape.

In this method we'll be removing a bolt from the transmission case. Damage can occur if using this method if you don't take the proper care and precaution. Follow these instructions at your own risk. If you ***** something it's not my fault in other words. :)

The car should be in neutral and the shifter should not be touched at all while the bolt is out. You should also not turn the wheels of the car.

Remove the fill plug. Put your catch basin under the trans. Remove the bolt pictured below. Lower the car slightly so that it is almost level but don't allow the tires to touch the ground. Allow the fluid to drain until it stops. Inspect the fluid for metal sparkles. While it's draining wrap the bolt with some teflon tape. Once the trans is done draining replace the bolt.

Drop the tube down through the engine bay and insert one end into the fill plug hole. You might want to lower the car just a bit at this point so it's semi-level. Attach the funnel to the other end of the tube and refill the trans. 3.1 quarts is it's total capacity but you can't get all the fluid out by draining it this way but you'll get close to 3 quarts in.

Once it starts to overflow, remove the tube and replace the fill plug. No teflon tape is needed in the fill plug. Remove the catch basin & your tools from under the car. If you spilled any fluid on the trans wipe the excess off. Take the car for a short spin and double check for leaks.

That's about it. :)

Revival!

I've got the same problem with a 92 that was wrecked head on. I do not know the rod shifters, but I have 2 trannies that shift good (the replacement one is still not the one from Aaron Nelson).

I'll check the stabilizer portion of my shifter an compare MTXs
Thanks!
