I just purchased this car and i love it except for the shifter. When i shift i am never really sure if its in gear or not and while shifting the whole shifter piece is turning in my hand not just the ****.I took the black box apart today and the ball on the bottom looked good. Also the piece it goes inside looked good. There was just a little bit of dust from the bushing. When i pulled this box off the ball and the piece that went over it came apart.Should they have?Is it the loose shifter causing the problems??I looked at where the rod goes into the tranny and theres no looseness and the bolts are very tight. Thanks for any help, chris.

The joint portion of the shifter is plastic and has a couple of "ears" that are intended to keep it from rotating as you've described. When the ears break the shift handle can turn.

You need to find a new shift lever or shifter assembly with intact ears. There is a short shifter modification that many people do that replaces this part, so you may be able to find someone who has a spare stock shifter laying around.

I had a broken shifter for a while and personally I think it's dangerous. You can't really control where the shifter is going to go when it can spin like that and it can be seriously distracting.

There's a "Wanted" section on the forum and you can post a short ad there to let folks know that you need a stock shifter replacement.

A gen1 shifter will work if the car has a rod shifter in it already, or one that has been put in afterwards. From the factory, I believe 91' SHO's after June had the rod shifters. Good luck!

Gen 1 cable shift is no good in a gen 2, but some 91s came with a rod shifter that will work in the gen 2s
