Hey all. I bought a 1992 Taurus SHO with the oil pan off (along with other stuff) the previous owner was replacing the rod bearings. So now I am working on this, I have 3 done so far but of course I am having to rotate the crankshaft. All the belts are in place and when I first started it looked like the (crank pulley?)(whatever the circular thing is where I use my socket wrench to turn the shaft) was aligned with a mark.

I haven’t done a engine project like this ever so I am a noob about it all. Is it going to throw off the timing with me rotating the crankshaft to access the connecting rods? If so, how do I fix it?!

I have already rotated it about 60 or 70 degrees. I just don’t want to mess it up. I feel good about everything else except this. (Well also i am missing a set of the connecting rod cap nuts)

Plz help!!! -Logan

Even with the timing belt off you will still be ok as long as you line everything back up before you install the timing belt. These cars are very easy to work on!

Each cam sprocket has a dot on it that lines up with a mark on the rear timing cover. Likewise, the crank sprocket has a dot on it that lines up with a mark on the oil pump. With these three marks lined up you are good to go.

If the belt is still on the car then you can verify the timing marks on every 2nd rotation of the crankshaft. The cam sprockets and crank sprocket will line up every 2nd rotation.

Ok thank you guys so much!!! I think I will end up replacing the timing belts anyway but I want to see if it fires up after sitting for 2 or 3 years. Just gotta put the oil pan and everything else back on…
