Shifter linkage problems?

One of my shifter cables broke, it is stuck into first. The one that controls side-to-side works just fine, but when I shift up or down it will move but it has no resistance what so ever, where is that cable, how do I fix it? Thanks.

The cables connect in 2 places. At your tranny and at the bottom of the shifter. They usually disconnect at the tranny.
