Hi
First post and urgent question. No surprise I'm sure. Original owner
My 89 at 67000 has occssionaly been lopeing/surging at idle and low rpm excelleration. I started the 60k a few weeks ago and so far replaced plugs, plug wires relay module. I figured If I stumbled onto a fix doing that it would be good. The problems actually got better after the initial work.
On the way to work this morning it began stalling and shutting down I barely got into the parking lot it was bucking like a bronco. It stalled several times and became difficult to restart offering backfire the last time. It will be spending the next few days here untill I can figure it out. Diagnostic code 18 and 19 came up.

Anyone have any idea where to start?

18 (R) Check base timing & advance function - Timing Tests
(M) Ignition TACH signal erratic - Ignition Systems

19 (O) No Vehicle Power (pins 37 + 57) or bad PCM VPWR Diagnosis
(R) Erratic idle during test (reset throttle & retest) - Idle Set Procedures
Electronic ignition Cylinder ID sensor/circuit problem - Ignition Systems

Sounds like a 60k will make a difference... Cam sensor maybe for 18.. IDK exactly for 19

Thanks much.
Cam sensor is next. Your right 19 is not explicit. Maybe after dealing with 18 something will come up. This baby is acting like a top fuel in bad tune or a timing nightmare. An SHO back-firing, unfathinable!

If it's intermittent, try wriggling the wires at the CPS when it's "acting up". This sounds similar to a past problem w/ my 89. I never replaced the sensor... just taped the wire bundle so it was supported better.

Did you have the intake removed?
If so, check the ground strap that goes from the rear of the intake to the fire wall.

Did you remove/replace the ignition module fron the intake crossover tube?
If so, make sure you used some dialetric grease/heat paste before installing it. The module also get's its ground from the lower two 5.5mm bolts. Make sure they are snug.

My SHO had the same problem, bucking like a bronco and backfiring.

I replaced the cam sensor and no problems since. Really easy to do.

FYI, O'Reilly's has Lifetime Warranties on there Cam Sensor's :thumb:

Thanks for the lifetime warranty tip... After not doing it for months my '89 did it again Mon. night. (pulled to side of road - wriggled the connector a bit and it "fixed" the idle / drivability issues enough to get me home.)

$36 at O Reilly's and about 15 minutes and she ran beautifully again last night.

Try this fix - cheap, fast and solves a problem you're describing.
