shaft play, fixable?

so a guy at the bar by my house just dropped of an old turbo from a mazda, its kinda cute its .45 A/R compressor housing and .42 turbine housing internal wastegate. on top of that he also dropped off an intercooler that was "lying around the shop" i presure checked the intercooler and it held presure however the turbo has about an 1/8 inch of play in the shaft, is it possible to rebuild it, i think it would be kinda fun on the sho as a daily driver considering i would obviously have to limit boost to a reasonable psi... lemme know what you think

That turbo is way too small for a SHO.

True, although the intercooler looks like it should work with a toolman style setup.


A sho turbo should be around a 60 trim. 45ar is teeny, and im maxing a 63.

I had a feeling it was too small. Spool up would have been insanely fast though

Sell it and use money to buy bigger turbo or go to a junk yard and find one. Sometimes if you’re lucky you can find older supra, stealth, or 3000gt. But yes rebuilding the turbo would fix your problem id send it out to have it pro done though.

A good turbo rebuilder can rebuild most of them. If you still wanna have it rebuild , contact a place that deals with big trucks , they usually have a contact where they rebuild their turbos.
