Mark Nunnally's video and SHOPhoenixproject web site(great site) each tighten the timing belt without rotating the engine like the Chilton manual says to do. Is it okay to skip the extra step per the Chilton's manual and set the belt tension and tighten the nut? Anybody have a bad result by not following the Chilton procedure?

The procedure I have always used (and the one outlined in the service manual) is to release the nut once the belt is on, then snug it back down, rotate the engine at least 2 revolutions, and then release and retighten the tensioner. I've always done it this way with good results.

I've never rotated it, and never had a problem FWIW. There's even a TSB reiterating the importance, but again I've yet to run into a problem...

Likewise, I didn't even know there was a procedure. I tighten it until the belt stops complaining when the a/c is on.
