while doing rear suspension work, it looked as though my porportioning valve rod was stuck. is the rod in the middle of the valve body the moving mechanism that biases the brakes according to rear load setting ? i didnt have time to investigate any more, but i would like some info about the valve. if someone has pics for visual aide, thatd be nice too.

TIA

The proportioning valve is a little like a Star Trek communicator (the kind Capitan Kirk had), in that it has a folding joint on one end. The rod moves one side on the hinge.

There should be a spring on the rod that will make the unit reasonably easy to test whether it is jammed or not. If the bottom half of the "communicator" can be moved, then it isn't likely to be jammed.

It is a little hard to fully describe through text, but I hope that helps a bit.

the arm is free but i thought the rod in the middle is what actuated the valve. i need some clarification. thank for the attempt though..as it might be helpful to Trekkies wink

Before mine got stuck on the Highway at about 70 and locked the rear brakes and DESTROYED everything rant

It would occasionally stick and you could feel it, it's like the brakes aren't releasing, because that's exactly what's happening. It really drags the car for obvious reasons.

If you think there is a problem with it, get a new one, if I recall correctly it was a little over $100 from Ford (don't quote me though), or get rear bias plugs to bypass it.

Just get it fixed, I had to replace both rotors, hoses, the rear bias valve, calipers, caliper slide pins, brakes, everything was fried! eek!
