hey guys,

My name is Jon and I just met a guy at the local Mcdonalds. He owns a Red 94' ATX SHO with 228,000 miles (saw odometer with own eyes) and is the original owner. Anyway, his trans has never failed or anything at all, and he has NEVER ADJUSTED THE VALVES!!!! His car runs quieter and stronger than my 93' ATX with 145K and 2 valve adjustments. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?

Naturally he could be lying, but assuming he's not, it's not impossible if he was otherwise diligent about fluid changes and other maintenance, never beat on the car and did a lot of highway cruising... That doesn't mean the car is in good operating condition though. Almost any one-owner car out there that's been babied, even with some ignored maintenance items, can last that long or longer without major problems.

A friend from college was given a 1986 Chevette by his grandmother in '91 with only ~20K miles on it, and he drove it daily until a couple of years ago when it finally rusted out from under him. It had over 250K miles on the original motor and tranny and the only maintenance he ever did was change the oil regularly and replace the plugs ONCE!

I believe him. There is a 20-25 yr old kid that lives near me that has a red 94atx and it has 270,000 miles on it and the motor is black!!!! He doesn't know anything about the car, except hey it has a CD player and a sunroof, woooopie! He said that one time the motor had a small oil fire and he also mentioned something about the dampner going bad? not sure though. He bought it off of a truck driver at around 200,000 who said it had mostly highway miles. I asked him if he knew what the in-ter-net was, no clue, no computer. I mentioned 60k and got the dear in the headlights stare. :)

WOW!!!! hail

My mom had a chevette GT a long time ago before I was born. BOth of my parents talked about how unreliable that car was. THey laughed and said it didn't make it off of the lot without stalling and having problems. The car had low tech traction control. THere wasn't enough power to spin the wheels and the brakes were too weak to lock the wheels. hahaha. Chevette. What a piece.

It's possible, i think.
Which would last longer?
1. 90% of the shift points are at 2k-2.5k rpm's and changing the fluid every 10k miles
or
2. 90% of the shift points are at 3k-4.5k rpm's and changing the fluid every 30K miles.

well I can top all those mileage stories.

I sold my stock MTX y-pipe to a guy down in NJ. I delivered it to him on my way to the Auto SHOw in NYC. His 94 has over 300k on it (MTX) and has never had a valve lash done. He's on his 2nd clutch, and it is all highway miles.

His engine sounded better than mine, cept I know mine has some light lobe wear. I so wanted to pull the valve covers off his car and look around.

I wonder how little air is flowing thru his intake?

Anything's possible.

I'd love to see that valve train.

I'm more shocked by that mileage on an automatic than with the engine never having a 60k. Especially considering it's a SHO automatic.

On a drive to work about 2 years ago, I stopped at a light next to another 89 SHO. We briefly chatted but he mentioned having 220k on regular oil changes only. By the exterior of his car, I didn't doubt his claims. (very rusty, not well maintained)
