New to the forum, and after browsing for a bit I've found there are only a couple options for tuning devices. So the most common brand is SCT but they have 4 or 5 different devices. My question is which one is best? or are they all the same besides the obvious aesthetic differences?

I just bought a sct x4 just to have a basic hand held. But I also have a separate set up for gauges.

I also heard that HPTuner is a good one but haven't seen it mentioned much on here.
I've never used them but also heard good things. But for a long time HP seemed to be focused on GM products and, from what I understand, it's been only recently they have gotten into Fords, while SCT has been a Ford supporting tuning device for a long time. At least that's how it was explained to me.

Live Wire. Many of the SHO tuners do not tune with HPtuners.

Gearhead uses hptuners, Ortiz uses hptuners, brewcity boost uses hptuners, unleashed tuning uses hptuners, SCT is severely outdated especially with fords. But....if you have a 2012 or older Ford....SCT is probably better.

Do they tune them on the SHO platform? Just because they can....doesn't mean they do for our platform.

Hptuners is becoming more popular in the platform for sure but lacks a ton of features on the 10-12 and has only more recently become used on 13+. That being said the vast majority of the quicker guys use SCT because that's the preferred platform by the majority of the tuners in these cars.

Canary was the preferred gas detector in the mines for a long time.
Those birds didn't stand a chance.

Maybe we can get some tuners thoughts on this. Ask a professional round one!!! Torrie? Matt? Lee? Calling unleashed, Ortiz, and Gearhead. I know SCT themselves told me that don't recommend themselves for 18+ Fords lmao.

On other news the SCT x4 felt like a 1980s atari cartridge. But those fackin 9minute tune load times? No thanks, I'll take my 1min hptuners flash all day any day.

My car is tuned on HPTuners. Its definitely less buggy than the SCT, but I'm not a fan of the nGauge datalogging as you can only log 14 parameters at once and it forces a "one step at a time approach" for tuning. The MPVI2 is awesome, but there are risks associated with liability should someone decide to buy their own credits and modify the tune. But that's a different topic.

HPTuners is fairly limited on the SHO. A lot of tables are missing, and while Eric and his team are open to updates, we aren't moving enough to justify it and the other tuners aren't making noise so our requests are pushed down behind Mustang development. I wouldn't even bother trying to tune a 10-12 SHO with HPTuners at the moment. We use it 5-6 times a day for Mustangs though. A majority of our dyno tunes are with HPTuners.

As for SCT devices, the software is the same its all in the additional features. I ran an X3 for years because I didn't care about live data until the Ecoboost. I traded a customer for the X4 when his pcm wouldn't recognize it after the EPA update. Still have it since I'm not 100% on the nGauge. If our request is completed we may ditch SCT though.
