I am looking at getting a tune here VERY soon and am wondering any pros/cons to either tune as well as any personal experiances. :thumb:

I have had the FPS tune for a little over a year now. At the time, Doug Lewis was the only game in town for a custom tune. Of course, now NESHO has their own tune. I guess you would have to speak with someone who has had both tunes, if that person does exist. Paul Nimz also is a SCT dealer & will do a tune for you using information from the data logging feature on the flasher. Bottom line, though, is no matter whose program you use you will be very happy with what you get. The XCal2 is, IMHO, the most cost effective modification you can do to your SHO. The difference in how the tranny behaves is dramatic. You will experience better drivability & fuel ecomony. Lots & lots of little things are changed from the factory program & it all adds up a car you will be much happier with!

i went with an XCal 1 (vs. an XCal 2) from Doug at FPS via a SHO Forum group buy.
Doug installed his suggested three programs on the XCal which for most are perfect. however, after a short trial period i contacted him to make a few program mods.
since i have a '99 without an OD off button, i had him create a custom tune that allowed me to maximize my 2nd gear (you'd have to experience it to understand).
he emailed the tunes to me and i up-loaded them onto the programmer.
bottom line...the FPS service was great, my SHO shifts great, i use the "mid-grade" fuel tune, and im a happy camper.

Never had a Doug tune, but I am VERY happy with Paul Nimz's tune. He understands the programming on these cars better than anyone I know of.

Does NE SHO offer 3 different programs to play with like FPS or just 1? I think that would be a big help not to HAVE to put premium in the car defiantly considering the rise in gas prices!!!

If you want three programs you can have three programs.

The way I tune only one is really needed for use with any octane.

I think that would be a big help not to HAVE to put premium in the car defiantly considering the rise in gas prices!!!

regarding premium vs. reg & mid grade...
when regular was $1.49: mid grade was $1.59 (7%) and premium was $1.69 (13% higher than reg)
today in California regular is $3.19: mid grade is $3.29 (3%) and premium is $3.39 (6% higher than reg)

percentage wise vs. regular, premium costs less now than it ever has.

i've noticed that when i run the regular tune with regular gas i get a ping every now and then.
mid-grade tune with mid-grade fuel seems to be fine w/ no ping.

i have not gotten below 20mpg since getting tuned by paul. that's including the times i've been out screwing around. Usually average around 21-23 combined city/highway. I was getting around 19-21 before.

I've been dealing with Paul N. from NESHO. Based on my experiences, I would definitely recommend dealing with Paul.

I have used both. I am not sure if FPS tune has changed, but when I was using their tune, it would ping BAD above 4k. I thought it was because of the loose heat shield TSB until I swicthed back to the stock tune. My engine also ran hotter on the FPS tune.
Now, I deal strictly with P. Nimz's. No more rattle and a cooler engine. He is a great person to deal with.

I just purchased a tune from Paul. Now my car is still in a million pieces so I can not comment on the driveability of it. I am pleased with the service and assistance so far. I'm sure there will be some retuning due to the mod's I'm working on but I feel confident that it will be of the same quality that others have mentioned.

I purchased my X-Cal 2 from FPS and can't say I'm very happy with the tunes it came with. I don't wan't to get into the specifics of the whole thing but I can say I would steer anyone asking tward Paul for a tune.

Oh, if anyone is intrested, mod's are:

*Equal length catless y-pipe
*Magnaflow round muffler just after y-pipe
*2.5" to the back y-pipe, 2.25" from there using the stock tips
*Delete IMRC, butterflys and throttle shafts for secondaries

I'll post some pics when it's done.
