I have a 93 MTX and when i am setting still and i cut the wheel the steering wheel actually cuts back and forth maybe an inch or so on its own. Also if i go from high RPMs and let them fall down while i am in a curve the car cuts itself the oposite direction even though my steering wheel don't move. I found that out doing about 130 a couple of months ago. That is freaky to say the least. I didn't know if there was a pressure sensor bad or if the rack and pinion needs replaced or if i need to change my pump. My pump makes some noise so i know its on its way out. Any help would be great. Thanx!

... checlk your subframe mounts... im guessing they are dissolved or are on their way out or you have possibly dropped one side already. loose/broken/non existant subframe mounts will cause extreme steering issues that drastically change while braking/accelerading/decelerating and turning.

-Mitch

p.s if you dont know what you are looking for take a pic of the subframe from behind the drivers side wheel.

I just redid my subframe mounts new bushings, bolts and nuts. The car had already been through the recall because it had the rubber plugs inside the floorboards. I bought a recall kit because the nuts where stripped out so i replaced all of that and thats good. Its something in the steering cause if you put just a little pressure by turning the wheel when setting still it will cut back and forth by its self.

Flush your power steering fluid and make sure the rack is tight on the subframe.

Couple different ways to go about this.

one would be to siphon the existing fluid out of the reservoir.

another, would be to disconnect and extend the power steering return hose off of the reservoir, and place it into a catch container.

cap off where the hose came off (from the reservoir), start the car and top up with new fluid as the old fluid pours out. You will need a 4 liter jug of fluid to do this properly.

having an assistant inside the car to start it and turn the wheel back and fourth in either direction will ensure all of the old fluid gets flushed out of the rack / system.

I recommend using ATF instead of regular power steering fluid (I personally use mobil1 synthetic atf). It had more detergents / additives which make it a bit better than the regular PS fluid.

ATF is recommended by the SHO Owner's Manual, anyway. I also use Mobil1 Synthetic, never had any problems. Make sure you bleed it!

Did you ever run the car for a extended period of time without any power steering?

There is a couple things here. Either the ball joints are loose within the knuckle (worn knuckles) or there is something loose in the steering column.

^^Definalty the easiest way!^^ You'll get about 90% of the old stuff out.

First place i would look. Out of all the SHO's I've owned, everyone has had the original contol arms/ ball joints.

Same happened to me, changed the VSS /variable speed sensor and the rack.
I could be sitting still and would get different resistance to the wheel at different rpms, a real pucker on an exit ramp!

Ok, I changed the power steering fluid and the steering feels a LOT better (more resistance) BUT, when setting still and you turn the wheel a little bit, just enough to put pressure on it and you barely turn it the other way there will be a big change in pressure and the steering wheel will cut back and forth as long as you keep a little pressure on it. I was hoping the speed sensor on the rack would fix it. Autozone had no listing of this part. So i don't know what to ask for. BTW I flushed my power steering system by taking the return line off of the power steering resevoir and sticking it down into a gallon jug and starting the car and letting it pump all of that old fluid out and suck all of the new fluid into it. Pretty cool and easy

Mine does the same thing, I have replaced every component of the front end including pitman arms, lower ball joints, sway bar links, rack and pinion, EVERYTHING...still does it.

Another thing that I heard a few years ago was the steering column has a telescoping effect so as not to crush you chest in a head on.
It was loose at some point under his dash and he spot welded it.
