rusty door stripes gen 1

Looking for the best solution to the infamous rusty door stripes. I've searched but there isn't a lot of info. The pieces I have are pretty rough. I don't want to invest the time just to have them pop through again. I would really like to know if someone has used a plastic/rubber stripe instead, and all the details.
By the way, finding the stainless pieces from an LX has been a dead end. "Northern OHio".

I'd keep searching for the stainless ones. I've had them on my car for a few years and they're definetly worth it.
