Both my 89 and 93 have the rust cancer at the wheel well under the gas door. Anybody know why this happens here. When I have the paint and body work done will they know how to prevent this in the future?
thanks

Not sure of the why but this a very common thing on these cars. look for bubbling at the rear fender well too.

You should ask if they have an application that can help prevent its return. I have never seen repairs like that last over the long term, but maybe someone else has a different experience.

Its from the gas. If you look at the crease where the "gas inlet housing" is on, there is a bead of sealer in there. The gasoline obviously eats whatever they used to seal it. It gets behind there, sits on the rear quarter lip where the rear cover and QL meet, and rots it out.

Wipe all the crap out of there, get some sort of roofing sealer, or silicone in a caulk gun. It should prevent it.

The problem is related to the gas door, but not as indicated above.

The REAL problem is the baffling used to keep gas fumes from the filler area getting into the passenger compartment and trunk. Those baffles give dirt and dust an area to pile up on and water keeps it wet. Water, dirt and time, equal rust from inside the fender.

Not much you can do about it other than to be sure to wash the bottom of the car and the wheel well area as good as you can, but you still won't be able to get into that area.

The baffles don't exist on the left side, and thus you don't get that type of rust there.
