When I take off in the car every morning, the rpm's go to like 6k before it will downshift. This is 1st to 2nd gear only. And it won't do it after that initial time. Runs fine the rest of the day but of course does it again the next morning. Any ideas??

BTW, I almost traded in the SHO for a Caravan today. My family keeps getting larger and we are thinking about something with a little more room.

SHO for a minivan. What the **** is the world coming to??

Do you mean upshift?
How far down are you pushing the gas pedal? I remember one time last year after my car sat for a couple of hours, I pulled onto the highway within a few seconds of driving the car, and with a WOT run the car shifted at like 7300-7500 rpms. It was wild. Engine sounded awesome, but I hope it never does that again!

I believe you mean upshifting. It's because everything is cold and still warming up...including the tranny. Just be real gentle with the car for the first few minutes, as you should with ANY car when it is cold.
And in reponse to Wuzzzer post, I don't know how the car hit 7300-7500 RPM! The cars rev limiter will kick in at 7,000 RPM. I have also nailed the gas when the car was cold to impress people...and With the car in "D" (drive), it sat at 7k RPMS bouncing off the REV limiter for about 4 seconds untill the car shifted itself...that was the first and last time I abused the car when it was cold!

is this at normal take-off speed? first shift of the day? do you idle a little before you go or are you like my wife [better move out of the way as soon as you hear the starter] she's not allowed to drive my SHO.

You really should idle a bit, at least 30-60 seconds, more if you can, before putting the car into gear and moving off. Not just with the SHO, but with any car. Additionally, you should avoid serious effort on the engine and transmission until the oil gets up to a reasoable temperature. This is one of the advantages of having an Oil Temp installed. I try never to push mine until the oil temp is up to about 100F.

attn: SHO gurus, does the obdII light the check engine light for trans codes or just emission related codes? if it doesn't you may need to check codes.

Yes, the SES light will illuminate for tranny related problems.

I had a problem with the tranny last year at the convention. It would bounce off the rev limiter for a few seconds. It turned out to be the pump drive shaft and a worn-out brass bushing.

My '96 has run the same way for all of the 5 years I have had it ... so I wouldn't worry. As far as the minivan, we recently got a new Buick Rendezvous and I am quite impressed. It's a little ugly (however, it does look best in the black color we got), and not very fast, but it is quite comfortable and loaded with features. AWD, third row seat, pretty good 6 CD stereo etc. etc. Best of all, IT'S NOT A MINIVAN!
