i have a 97 with 128,000 miles, ford dealer wifes car since new. stack of service records every 3000 miles but when plugs were recommended wife declined $60 charge at her own dealership to do this. i bought car and it ran great until recently. i cleaned tb and iac and have k & n panel filter with hose to fender disconnected from fender (but still there) ,
idles from 500 to 750 when ac on barely studdering when ac on, hardly notice idle movement from 750 when ac off. but studders going into high gears at low rpms easing on it. wide open throttle surges up then down and pulls hard then simmers down.
i got a ck light on and i replaced fuel filter(dirty) runs a little better. got new plugs and gonna do the fun thing, so i guess i`ll run a scan and see what`s up with that. any input appreciated. thanks

I do not know if you have already read around a bit about the Gen III, but if you have not, you need to look into getting the cam sprockets welded to the cams right away. You are well into the mileage area where they commonly fail, and the result is most often a fairly dead engine.

Your shudder itself could be a fair number of things. Did you pull the codes?

I have been told not to use excessive oil on the K&N filter it will cause the MAF to get fouled prematurely resulting in problems, poor idle, etc. Try cleaning the MAF, Easy enough & see what happens.

update

ran fuel injector cleaner thru system changed fuel filter and check light went off for a few days and idle and running got much better. then the check light came back on after wife got fuel at enmark. ran codes and it says misfire on cylinder #3. so i`ve put more cleaner in and water dispersal chemical.
i`ve got all new ap platinum plugs but haven`t installed yet.
i believe it to be a fuel system/injector problem or a bad coil or plug. any input appreciated. and is it a real pain as i think it is to change plugs? thanks, alan

ps if i didn`t mention before i cleaned iac, throttle body etc., also got MAF cleaner now to do that while doing all else.
