I also have a problem with the engine cutting out past 1/4 throttle, however mine will absolutely not rev past 4,000rpm. My first thought was replacing the TPS, which did not help. After this i checked the pin voltage and resistance reading of all the engine sensors at the PCM, and they all checked out OK. I realized then that my valve cover O-rings had gone out filling my plug wells with oil, i cleaned off the spark plugs, and cut off both cats (which were clogged from the oil vapor)

All of this has still not resolved the issue at all.

Next im going to work on checking out the AIRC solenoid and intake runners, because of the fact that the motor will not rev past 3.5/4k i think they may be stuck closed, however i understand that this shouldnt neccassarily cause this issue.

If anybody has any other input please let me know

I had a similar prob with hesitating when I put a load on the engine below 2K rpm, on two different occasions. The first time, new plugs/wires fixed it, The second time, it didn't. Until I found out that the DIS module rubbed on the engine dampener bracket when under load, right where the plug is. And it got partially disconnected. So I took a Dremel to it and ground 1/8" off the bracket, problem solved. BTW, 40 mph in 5th is what, 1500 rpm, and borderline to lugging the engine - not advisable, especially if you are going to punch the throttle at that engine speed....

ive also noticed in first gear starting out.. after i get the car moving and the tach starts going up past about 1500 rpm mine will sputter a little bit until the secondaries open up then its fine, ive been meaning to pull codes havent had the time to do so.

on another note, apalmer1 and im buddy8, if you havent yet, and i dont think it would throw a code im sure im probably wrong on that.. but with the way that sounds, i would check are the o2 sensors as ive heard that can cause thos kinda problems and second check the fuel filter or the fuel pressure regulator as it might not be getting enough gas past a certain rpm or at a certain amount of throttle pressure.

hope this helps but its not be the best advice but at least i tried to help.

1st if you have an automatic transmission car then you can't rev past 4000 in park or neutral so first please clarify that isn't what you're trying to do.

2nd rough running with no trouble codes can often be traced to primary ignition. I'd suspect one or more bad plugs or wires.

If you had significant oil in the plug wells, you will need new plugs and wires before it will run right again. The oil makes the plugs/wires short out, and once they have the carbon tracking on them, they will continue to short under load.

my car is a 94, and yes it is an ATX, but its easy to tell weather the problem exists or not because regardless of RPM it will cut out at anything over 1/4 throttle. I sucked the oil out of the plug wells and pulled the plugs and wires and cleaned off the tips of the plugs a little bit to see if would help but i havent noticed any difference yet. at this point however there is almost no oil left in the poor thing, do these cars have a oil pressure safety switch?

I checked the opperation of my secondaries and they are functioning perfectly, as is the IAC.

when i get a chance im going to pull the valve covers and fix the oil issue, as well as replace the wires/plugs, but something tells me that because i didnt notice any difference with the plugs and wires, there is some other issue.

any more ideas? thanks for all the help

well i replaced the valve cover gaskets/plug seals as well as the plugs themselves, nobody in town had the wires but i cleaned the ends of them all very thuroughly. This did not change anything at all, the problem is definately something computerized. when i was first running the car i had several vacuum issues and without my input at all it was revving itself up to 4k and then back down just like normal, however once i got all teh vacuum routing taken care of and it was idling normally it went right back to the same shit.

im going to mess with the IAC valve and test the TPS again, maybe the replacement i got was also defective. im running out of ideas here..

i'm running out of ideas here..

Listen carefully, my padawan, if you ask for advice and you get some, you should probably take it.

Your car will continue to run like crap until you put new wires on it. Just because no one in town has them does not change the fact that they have been damaged by the oil in the plug wells, and no matter how carefully you clean them they will still short due to the carbon tracking that is in them from shorting through the oil.

It is certainly possible that you have other issues, too, but until you fix the ones you know you have, you are wasting other people's time.....
