I have some noise in my shifter and was looking through some of the old posts and was wondering how do I get into the box from the top by removing the center console or from the bottom I am probably looking at replacing the shifter ball and bushing. Any advice etc would be great.
Thanks Eric

this shifter box can only be removed by under the car two nuts in back and stablizer bolt in front (into trans) and shifter rod to trans. i know because i just snapped the bolt off my stabilizer arm into trans. the bad news is i also broke a drill bit off inside the bolt in trans good thing i have a spare rebuilt trans.

After the shifter box and linkages are removed from the car, you need to remove the four screws that secure the metal plate to the top of teh black box. Note the orientation (up or down) of the receiver on the horizontal shift shaft.

You can apply bearing or lithium grease to the vertical shift lever's pivot joint and work it in with repeated motion of the shifter lever. Also apply the grease to the ball at the bottom end of the shift lever and the plastic receiver socket on the horizontal shaft. Apply a little grease to the *********** at the front of the black box where the horizontal shift rod exits.

Inspect the joints at the transaxle end of the shift linkage and apply lithuim grease to these pivot points. If the joints have too much play due to worn nylon bushings, you can look up the shifter topic I made discussing their repair.

This maintenance should help the shifts be smoother and less effortful. Enjoy.

You don't have to worry about taking pictures for us as to what's in there. Just a ball and socket... wink I just bought one off of some guy from SHO Club about 2 weeks ago, and it's rusted bad, so I'm taking a wire wheel to it and getting rid of all that rust. I envy you GEN II folks and late 91 folks who already had one of these from the factory and didn't have to pay $115 for it!!! hail
