Well I'm slowly but surely gathering parts that will be used when I'm ready to build and reassemble my 3.0, and I want to be absolutely sure that I'm eliminating any possible weak points. Are there any aftermarket rod bolt options? Any other vehicle's rod bolts cross reference (even if they need length trimming or anything like that)?

I contacted sales at ARP and see what it would take to make a run of 50 -100 rod bolts sets. Lets see what happens

You won't break the stock rod bolts. They are very strong. I know at one point that someone on here tried to get ARP to make some bolts for us. I don't think anything happened.

BTDT... Twas me...

ARP said:
I’ve measured the OE bolt and the closest match in our inventory is the rod bolt for the Mitsubishi 4G63. At first the only problem appears to be the bolt is .050” short. I have requested samples from our warehouse to test the fit. I will contact you tomorrow with the results.

Jay

What someone here has done... Ransom, IIRC.

"Here is the answer: ARP doesn't make a correct rod bolt for the SHO, however they do make one that is close. 133-6002, which is for a 2.8L Chevy V6, will work with some machining of the rod. Primarily the rod/cap has to be slightly drilled and tappered (using a rimmer bit). My LC 3.0L has them installed, haven't pick the short block up from the machine shop .. I'll get the specifics and post them when I do .."

There was also a guy on cardomain that found something to work, but I didn't take him as a trustworthy source.

I couldn't dig it up in my e-mails, but the cost was rediculous from what I remember. In the realm of buying a SHO and boosting it the expensive way. I did the research two years ago, however, things could have changed. I actually went through the trouble to send them a rod.

I just reused my bolts and have no problems. Pat, Terry, Tony and others have reused them too.

I to contacted them a couple years ago and got pretty much the same thing, they asked for me to send in a rod and bolt. At that point guys were making 500+ hp on stock rods and bolts so I dropped the idea. I never was quoted a price but Im sure the demand would not cover the price.

Most rod bolt failures are due to improper torque. The nut comes lose and the bolt snaps. You need to torque them at least twice and break them free each time before the final torque, this gets rids of burs/ inperfections that give bad readings.

The proper way is to stretch a bolt and use a strech gauge and measre the bolt as it is stretched to spec. Hers a pic but you use it with the rod installed.
