I know the proper offset is a 42 neg, but what are the limits? I found some nice rims, Borbet Type T, they come in a 17x8 but with either a 40 or a 35 offset. Wich would work with a wide rim like this? Also, will a 235/45 be ok to run on these? Does anybody know of anyother solid 5 spoke rims that are light and stylish? My price range is $280 each. Here are the type T's http://www.borbet.de/raeder-pkw/images/T/small.gif

If any of you remember my prev. posts on the OZ rims, I FINALLY got ahold of a rep and the ones I was gonna get only came in a 42 positive offset.

I've found that the Tire Rack is very conservative as to what they list as recommended fitment for wheels and tires. Which is a good thing, since you know that any wheel/tire combo they recommend will fit.

I know several people have used a 235/45 tire, but I always play devil's advocate when people are looking for tires. I know you know that wheels/tires are unsprung weight which affects performance a lot more than weight in other places. Why buy lightweight wheels and then get heavy tires?

I see that the Tire Rack currently recommends a 225/50/17 tire. I'd personally go with that size. Why? More than likely the tire will weigh less than a 235/45, more than likely the tire will cost less than a 235/45, and you won't have to worry about the tire being too wide to fit your SHO.

On my SHO I actually have 215/50/17 tires. They actually look wider than they might seem on paper, because my wheels are 7" wide, so the tires have absolutely no sidewall bulge. They look a lot wider than my 215/60/16 snow tires, which theoretically should be the same width. And one thing I can tell you is that I have never been able to find the cornering traction limits with my tires. I know I would have absolutely no need for a tire any wider than I do right now, because like I said I have never lost traction or even heard as much as a squeal from my tires even taking freeway ramps rated at 30mph at speeds up to 70mph.

In the end obviously you have to make the choice, but I just like people to see that there's a lot of options when it comes to tires, and it's best to sit back and figure out what your intentions are with choosing a particular size (performance/looks/etc).

And as a P.S., I'm 99.9% sure that when my Dunlops wear out they'll be replaced with Yokohama AVS ES100s.

I have the tires already though, they're Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's. I'm going to be going to Hallet Raceway this summer and many more times to come. So I'm for all out performance on everthing. But it also needs to stand up to some serious abuse.

After looking abit harder on tirerack.com at the specs on that wheel for offset is 38 positive....will that work? I thought it had to be negitive.

I am running Enkei RS5's (see signature)- 18x7 (I know you're looking for 17's, but they're available in that size too!) They're a "40" offset (the listing doesn't specify the direction, but I'm guessing it's the same direction as the stock rim since the position of the wheel relative to the fender is about the same. And they're far below your price range- $160 on Discount Tire Direct/$146 at local Belle Tire!
I'm using Toyo Proxes FZ4's with them: 245/45/18! Yeah, 245!
I really think I should've gone with 235/40's but this is a good tire for the rim- not a big side bulge, but enough so that the tire will act as a buffer if I encounter any road hazards.

I'll be quite honest- I've got some serious rubbing issues (then again, I have some dead strut issues too that could increase the intensity of suspension compression.) Fender rolling will be occurring soon! Another thing that doesn't help the rubbing is that the overall diameter is a little bigger than stock!

Good luck in your search!

I'm not sure about the actual weight, but they are pretty light according to the grunt-o-meter (they feel noticeably lighter than the OEM's- and that's with tires mounted)
Here are some pics:

Hope that helps! (I love 'em!- can't stop staring at the car when I walk away from it!)

I think that a 40 offset will not hit the struts when used with a 235x45x17, if that is of any help. I am using that and there is a good deal of clearance and I have never had a touch, even when pushing very hard and fast around the curves.

Most better tires have a weight number that can be obtained for them. I think you will find that very often the situation is that when you are trying to keep you circumference the same, that is you are decreasing the sidewall height as you increase the tire width when going to a larger tire, the resulting tire weights are pretty much the same, within a few ounces. This is because as the sidewall is shortened, it not only takes out rubber whose weight then can go to width, but it also requires that the sidewall be stronger, which means a denser remaining rubber and stronger or more sidewall steel belting. So very often a 245x45x17 is not a lot heavier than a 225x55x16.

Or you can compromise and get a 235x45x17 ;)
