As far as replacement wheel bearings and hubs go, yes.

The only difference in knuckles is between the ABS and non-ABS optioned vehicles.

I currently have 1994 Mercury Sable knuckles on my car.

next question...is it possible to replace the bearing/hub without removing the knuckle or having to take it to a machine shop to have it pressed in?

Anything's possible, but it's going to be a LOT harder to do with it on the car and require some very creative fixtures. Not only does the bearing have to be pressed in and out, the hub has to be pressed out of the old bearing and the assembly pressed back together.

IMHO getting the knuckle off will be much, much easier than trying to do the job in place.

yes. special tools required

hammer, sizeable but not too big
3/4 x 4" bolt
long 1" or 3/4" threaded rod with nuts, fine thread preferred
old bearing races
modified Slo idler pulley
some sort of real thick steel to back up the pulley
1" x 1.5" pipe reducer or a 460 crank collar
assorted really big washers and shims

as you may deduce, its sort of a custom job.
if the old bearing seperates life becomes a lot more complicated

Besides, you still have to pull the CV/axle stub out of the knuckle. Which means pulling the bottom ball joint.

years ago a noted VW place sold a tool for Rabbits and stuff, so there may be some tools out there that fit a Taurus. I personally don't know of any. Maybe the OTC catalog? J C Whitney?

Well Tim, how long did you let it go for it to get to the point that it ruined the hub also?

Not for nothing, and lord knows I've been guilty of this, but when something is wrong, or making an odd noise, or some other adverse change is noticed, fixing it sooner is invariably less expensive and frustrating than fixing it later.

okay...new question. how likely is it that the hub's so damaged that a new bearing can't be pressed in? is that common?

The hub damaged or the knuckle damaged? You can get a replacement hub pretty easily, and they do wear, but it's pretty unusual for the knuckle to get hosed up in my experience.

If there's 3/4" of play (I think I read that your other thread), I'd go for a new hub. I've been through this twice. The hub from my last one is now residing on my desk as a paper weight. The inner race of the bearing came out with the hub. I bet yours will fall apart as it's coming out too.

Make sure you keep the wheel studs from the old one though. They're probably longer than the ones in the new hub.

i got a new hub with the bearing. for some reason, i thought at some point i had to replace a spindle due to extreme bearing failure. i was thinking the wrong part.
