I've been laying low for awhile and haven't really done anything to the flat black '89 since February... just collecting ideas. I was at a really great show in South Carolina over the weekend and it got my gears turning. So I've finally decided where I'm going with it. I hate it when people post teasers but won't tell you what they're really up to, like you're going to steal their ideas and do it first or something.
I'm REALLY not worried about anyone copy-catting my ideas because they're kinda out there, and if I was into the whole perfect shiny paint and flawless 18" rims thing... I'd think I was crazy too.
So here's a little list of what's to come over the fall/winter. I'm waiting for a possible deal to come through on a good daily driver (a G35 Coupe) so I can park the SHO and not have to roll around half-finished for 6 months.
I'm keeping the flat black definitely, as it's my favorite thing about the car. Mostly because everyone else talked about doing it for forever but I was the only one with the balls to grind off my decent stock paint and just do it! It's just going to get redone with more of a satin clear on top. The flat with no clear just picks up grease like you wouldn't believe.
Motor is staying stock, I'm just adding the Edelbrock mufflers off the other '89 and the high flow y-pipe, and maybe some BBB's eventually. I'm over the whole going fast thing.
Interior is staying black, but I'm glassing in the entire dash and removing the console and all the brackets in the floor. Right now I have an old ball shifter from a Camaro, so that will get changed to something a little crazy, probably a skull with pinstripes or something. Since I have a few extra sets of seats laying around, I'm going to take apart the worst covers at the seams and make patterns, then make up some new covers in a very different fabric. I'm feeling something retro (of course) like maybe black suede & houndstooth. Overall, the interior will be very basic, clean, and black.
Now for some crazy stuff: The side mirrors will be changed to something smaller and chrome, like from a late 60's Camaro, Chevelle, etc.
I haven't officially decided on the wheels, but it should be a piece of cake. I want to do red enamel steelies with moon caps.
The headlights are from a '69 Chevelle (dual round headlights). The tail lights are from a 1996 Cadillac Deville and will be mounted horizontally instead of vertically. The panel where the license plate sits will be brought out to sit flush with the bottom edge of the trunk lid.
All my badging is already shaved, but I'm going to fill in all the body molding against the doors for a smooth finish all the way around the car. The front bumper will have all the grooves filled, except maybe the center slit underneath. Maybe a little bit of pinstriping somewhere, but definitely something subtle to contrast the flat black.
Now for the really crazy part... airbags. Yes, I know it will **** handling, but what do you think the G35 is for?
Stock LSD & a 6 speed sounds much more appealing on the road course for some reason. I've just never seen a SHO draggin, and I'm all about doing something different. My main motivator on that decision was the fact that I can get the whole customized setup however I want it for extreeeeeeeemely cheap through a personal hookup. Been there, done that with the coilovers... Time for something a little more wild!
