Any dealer body shop tech around here? Had a close encounter with a rock that destroyed the back glass. I looked everywhere for the procedure to replace it and came up empty. I was just wondering if all the trim and rear deck needs to come out to glue the new one in. If so, I was gonna go ahead and pull it myself since I have a lot of mods back there for the stereo and don’t want them messing anything up. I’m going to bring it to the dealer as I don’t want those safelite turkeys anywhere near my car.

I brought my 2016 to a Safelite place to have the windshield done with OEM. Had the best experience ever. Had multiple mobile guys come to my house with my other cars, and they all were whack jobs. Never had a leak though.

I would DEFINITELY specify OEM glass. My '01 F250, and my '97 cougar, had the windshields done with aftermarket, and you can see the waviness. I talked to my Ford dealer (Huntington Ford on Long Island), and they said they were just going to outsource it to someone else anyway.

Service Manual says rear parcel shelf/rear grab handles have to be removed along with dropping the rear of the headliner a bit. I know that this involves removing the trim and seat bolsters too so yup looks like it all has to come out.

Yeah, safelite here is horrible. Had a windshield get a star in it on the wife’s Flex last year. They sent out some guy who openly admitted he had been on the job 2 weeks. He dropped the vacuum pump thing on the hood and scratched it and then proceeded to put a resin soaked glove on her seat. Then the “repair” cracked and spread all the way across the glass the first time I drove it. I managed to buff the scratch out and clean the leather before it dried, but there’s no way I’m letting them touch our cars again.

I’m definitely getting oem glass at the dealer. On the Flex windshield replacement, the dealer ordered the glass and then a glass shop came to glue it in. The dealer handled disassembly and reassembly of the cowl, trim panels, rain sensing assembly, etc.

Thanks for the info. That’s exactly what I needed. I guess I’m gonna be pulling the seat and rear deck out before my appointment.

The back glass is nothing different or special. There's a small rubber weather-type strip that has to be glued to the new glass at the very bottom that goes between the glass and the trunk. The headliner doesn't so much have to come out or anything, just a very minor drop because the rear brake light is attached to the glass. And that light slips under the headliner.
I had my back glass in my 2014 replaced at Safelite 4 months ago and had the best experience ever. The technician actually put a rubber weather strip around the entire glass and looks better than OEM - and actually, I don't know why it's not like this from the factory to begin with! They do tend to use a different brand of glass than OEM and again, the tech was great - he called me to the shop to look at the glass before it went in. Luckily I noticed the glass was a little blurry at the bottom. He said that glass should be trashed and glad I caught it. Luckily again, they had a Ford OEM glass in stock.

Cool. Hopefully they’ll have enough access now to replace it then. I took the seat, all the inside trim, and the rear deck out. I have a lot of wires running through there for the stereo and don’t want them cutting anything.

Called the dealer, and they don’t do glass anymore at all, so I’m stuck with safelite. I’m gonna watch them like a hawk, though. Car is gonna have to sit in the garage till next week waiting on appointment so at least I have an excuse to put the bass transducers and new amp in that I’ve had for 2 weeks. Lol

The dealership can "sublet" the repair. Basically they pay someone to do the repair and it's still considered a ford repair.

Yeah, there’s not really much point though if they’re just calling in a glass company and then marking it up. I asked if the dealer still does the disassembly and reassembly of the car like they used to and they said no. The glass company does it all.

Gonna make sure they bring oem Ford glass though. I don’t want any of that cheap aftermarket crap. Hopefully it will be okay. How hard could it be to glue a piece of glass in, anyway? I already took it apart for them.
