No, you "have to" have the R134A recovered.

Even though it's supposed to be safe, the tree-hugger's still don't want it to be released into the atmosphere.

you *should* have it professionally evacuated. but you could just always jam a screwdriver in the schrader valve and give the big "F-U" to the environmentalists :D its your conscience...
