Well I've finally had to replace the third hard failure on my SHO. First the starter (80k), then the clutch (150k), now I've worn out the flasher. Everything else has been more-or-less by choice ;) or at least mostly working.

Symptoms started when the directionals would flash for 6-10 "blinks" then stop. After a while it was only one or two flashes, sometimes none. At these times the cornering lamps would light (if lights were on). Final test, the 4-way hazard lights wouldn't run either. Everything else is fine, although this unit has some contribution to the lights-out diagnostic too.

The flasher is located above your clutch leg, on the same piece as and above (behind?) the fusebox (my car is a gen2). It's plastic, with a small "L" bracket. Swing the fusebox down. The contacts face the driver's door, and the connector has no latch. Seen on the left:

The flasher clips to the bracket with a detent in the top. If replacing with a Ford piece, you don't need a tool - give it a tug toward the firewall. But that takes $70 if you're buying new. The parts store piece (seen on right) is only $15 or so but is larger and lacks a bracket or the ears to retain it.

To remove the bracket takes a 7mm socket, I used a 1/4" drive with a 6" extension. I then took the bracket off the original and hot-glued it to the top of the aftermarket one:

Of course I was careful to match up the 3 pins on the two flashers versus the bracket mounting surface as there's not a lot of room up there and trying to break off the bracket and re-glue would suck. You want the flasher to stand off the bracket mounting surface a little.

Re-installation is okay but the longer flasher doesn't fit the area quite as nicely, expect to clock it a little differently to get it to fit in. Also I find the sound of the parts store piece is a little different, toward annoying, and you get more of a resonance once it's bolted down. Next time it's warm enough and I'm annoyed enough I'm going to slip a felt washer or something in behind the bracket.

I didn't find any tech on this, so here's one for the search engine. Sorry the pics are so small, that's the size the board asks for??

Happy Blinking,
- Jeff
