Is there any downside to removing the mufflers? Does the SHO need a certain amount of backpressure? I was thinking about taking them out to see how it would sound but don't want to hurt anything. Also, does the car have three mufflers or two and a resonator?

Nesho has posted pictures of the stock exhaust as well as their custom pieces.

I understand that there is a 3rd cat which blends the two exhaust banks (much like an x pipe) and then a muffler with 2 inlets and outlets. Last there is a separate muffler on each side just ahead of the exhaust tips.

I replaced the separate mufflers with magnaflows. Sound is much like a stock V-6 Mustang. Just a mild growl. No muffler noise at hwy speeds.

NO car needs a certain amount of "back-pressure". That's one of the biggest myths in the automotive world. It's exhaust gas velocity that needs to be taken into consideration, not pressure.

Kirk has pictures and sound clips up on the NESHO website. CLICK ME

I've seen the videos there but his no exhaust video was with nothing I thought, no pipes or anything just open after the headers? I was wanting to cut out the mufflers to see how it would sound but now I want to get a Borla.

I believe his "no exhaust" video is just no cat-back. It's definitely not open headers. He'd have to remove the turbos to do that.

Are open headers the same thing as just removing all the exhaust after the headers feed into the cat? What about putting electronic cut outs in?

No. For one thing, most cars don't have headers from the factory. They have manifolds. They're pretty much the same thing, but headers are usually aftermarket and tuned for performance. The term "open headers" means that the headers vent directly to the atmosphere. There are no catalytic converters or mufflers. Read up on exhaust terminology here.

...what about them?

Ah, I understand now. Thanks for clearing it up for me. About the cut outs, it was just another route I was thinking of going, but I think I will get the borla seeing as the cutouts are really all noise and I think this car will need some careful exhaust design to keep it from sounding like a civic.

i still say the ECOBoost sounds the same as the Yamaha engine with the open Y-pipe...which, admittedly, is not necessarily a good thing...
