I discovered my driver side CV inner boot is torn and leaked out it's grease onto the frame area of my 97 SHO.

I read the RR info and it speaks of some required special tools to get the shaft out of the trans..

Is this true? Any home grown tips?

I got the car up, and lower a arm unbolted, along with removing the 30mm nut..

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Fairly easy with the right tools, at least when the engine is out of the car. :)

The tools I use are the large and small pitman arm pullers from AutoZone. The large one will pop the ball joint loose from the knuckle and the small one will pop the tie rod end out (when you leave the castle nut on) both very easily.

Then I take the caliper and rotor off, and (if still in the car) pop the strut out of the knuckle. Then with a large screwdriver or similar pry bar just pry on the axle at the tranny. Mine all come out surprisingly easy.

Once it is popped loose take the whole axle and knuckle and put the knuckle in a vise clamping at the strut mount part. Take off the axle nut with an impact, screw back on to protect the threads of the axle and then gently pound out the axle.

Be sure to not let the axle hyper extend the CV joints. Also a good time to to wheel bearings.

Wow, what an experience! Ball joint popped out of the knuckle. I ripped the replacement boot trying to get the ball joint back in and seated, and had to totally remove the knuckle..

Also, the only tool that worked (MAP gas, ball joint fork, my BFH) was the pitman puller.. When the ball joint release it sounded like a .22 going off!!

I think I am officially old. :(
