I am trying to replace my shifter handle because my park lockout button broke. I have been told that I have to remove the center console in order to disconnect the OD button wires before removing the shifter handle. I can not find all of the screws that hold the center console in. Does anyone have any experience doing this or know of a link that will point me to better pictures than Chilton's?

The upper console is only secured by one screw at the bottom of the cupholder (under the rubber insert).

The lower console is secured to the floor brackets by two screws underneath where the cupholder was, and by two bolts underneath where the lower DIN opening is (you might have a CD player, storage compartment, or cup/coin holder in that opening).

In previous posts there is talk about the 'upper' and 'lower' console. I can't distinguish the two. Also mentioned are two bolts/screws above the cassette holder - I can't find these either. Any help is appreciated.

The upper console is top of the console not including the armrest. There are clips in addition to the screw, so once that screw is out you'll need a little force to pull it upwards, backwards, and then disconnect the electrical connections.

I must have a mental block because I can't determine where, or what, to lift up and back. I am looking at the car now. I do have a CD player. I have removed the screw under the cupholder and all the screws under the armrest. Should I be lifting up on the section of the console that is nearest the back of the car (armrest) first? I have tried this and it feels pretty secure.

Lift anything that doesn't have carpet on it and that isn't the arm rest. Yes, it is often easiest to grab the lip under the arm rest. You shouldn't have to remove any screws under the arm rest -- just grab the lip and PULL.

WOW I owe you one! I would never had guessed at what just came apart. The upper console is off now and it doesn't look like I need to remove the lower for the job I'm doing. I've been staring at this thing for hours until I found this website. Can I assume that assmebly is as easy as removal?
