I've been disappointed in the range of the 5 button stock key fob and was googling around to see what the options were. It looks like Ford makes a long-range 2-way remote start key fob or even a smart phone start. However, the dealers around here say they don't handle remote start systems and just keep referring me to a third party installer for an aftermarket remote start. They, of course, don't know anything about the Ford system. I'd like to keep it OEM as possible.

Does anyone use this key or know if it can be added to the car? Says it's compatible with the car and is even a part of an application guide about the Ford remote start system.

What year is your car? The systems Change a little.

Referecing what is available for a 2016 and what i installed.

There is a scalable remote start system that can be added. It' plug and play with some minor programmng for remote start. You buy the vehicle security module. Thus has an accelerometer in it that can detect movement/impact. This can be disabled. But you can buy the box and plug it into the D.L.C and it works after cycling the lock and setting sensitivity.

Once you have the box, to get the extended range fob you but the fob and the antenna kit. I don' know if you need a Hood switch. If your car has one, it doesn't need to be added.

In a nutshell, you buy the security box, you buy the fob and you buy the antenna. There is a 1 way and 2 way fob and is why they split the parts up.

If you want to start your car with your phone, another system is added to the scalable security box and you pay a monthly fee.

All ford and Lincoln dealerships can install a Scalable Vehicle Security/remote start system as the instructions are on line for them to see under the Workshop manual tab > dealership installed accessories.

If a dealership is not comfortable installing it, find one that will. If you can't, bother them till they will install it.

Thanks, I was able to find the additional parts and the instructions online. Doesn't seem too difficult to do myself although the cost of the parts is a little disappointing. $160 for the VSS, $60 for the antenna, another $80 for the fob. Another $300 to extend the range on a car that already has remote start...

Yep. I feel you.

I'm 100% confident that it is the fob that is the problem. Working with the dealership we replaced the system and it didn' change the range. I added an external antenna to the tire pressure module and there was no change in range.

When you install the system, a scan tool will have to be used to program the fob as a key.

The instructions indicate there is an engine start/stop sequence to begin remote start fob programming (separate fob with just remote start and horn buttons). I think only fobs that have lock/unlock need to be programmed with the scan tool.

Oh, yep. You'er right. Just looked at the instructions. I am wrong.

I thought the security module would have to be learned to PATS

The dealer accessory installation is really easy and there is a smartphone app option if you want to spend the extra money. $450 or so should get you all the parts from the dealer, plus the $50/year subscription or whatever it is. I just went with the 2-way long range one for $300ish in parts and installed it in a couple of hours.

I'm working on the cell phone app version now. Just got all the parts. I think there's info in the "What Did You Do Today" thread...
