Wow, I actually just finished installing mine with my dad. It is an Ultrastart 2250M. It is made for manual transmissions only and comes with a badass alarm, and keyless entry. It was only like about a hundred dollars too. Here is basically how it works. When I get to where I wanna go, I put it in neutral, then hit the e-brake. Then I just tap the brake pedal and it chirps. Then when I take the keys out, the car stays running and shuts off when I close the door. It seems like a big hassle, but it's really not. You can find it on ebay if you type in remote starts for manuals, or if you go to www.mypushcart.com
Well, good luck man

I've got a JTI remote starter on my MTX. The way it is installed, there is no way you can start the car in gear. There is a start "reservation" you must set before leaving the car. The reservation goes like this: while the car is still running, set parking brake and put car in neutral, hit button II on remote, remove key and exit car (the car is still running at this point), hit button I on remote and car shuts off. The car is now ready to be remotely started. Hit button II and the car starts. Kinda of a PITA because if you forget to set it, you can't start it remotely. It's worth it though for those cold mornings. I know others have installed starters that do not require the start reservation, but then you run the risk of starting the car in gear.

Hahahahahahahahhahahahaaha..... You guys are gonna laugh your ass off and yes I am an idiot. I installed an autostarter on my mtx. It's an Avital 6500 and it's made for auto's only. You just have to remember to leave it out of gear, which is hard for me since I always put it in first when exiting the car.

Well, I was doing so good leaving it out of gear, except for this one morning. I looked out the back window, at my car sitting in front of my garage, and I pressed the button and runt, runt, WHAM! Right through the solid wood garage door. The wheels were cut a little so it went partially through the door and hit the side of the framework and shut off. Talk about feeling like an idiot. Wish I had a picture, but I didn't think to take one. Now, I am one of those kind of people that doesn't get too excited over things, so I looked at my wife and said, I just drove the SHO through the garage. I guess when something happens, I figure well it happened and there's nothing I can do about it now. So I calmly walked out to the car and backed it out of the garage door. It chipped the paint on the front bumper and scratched it up here and there. The garage door was pretty messed up. Luckily, I do body work and paint, so it only cost me the supplies.

I disconnected it until I can hook up some kind of switch on the shifter. There is a wire for the autostarter that when grounded, it will not autostart. I was thinking of getting some kind of magnetic window security type switch, that when the magnet is near the sensor it is opened/closed. I could mount the one part on the stick and make a bracket and mount the other part so that the shifter would have to be in neutral and to the left, in order for it to start.

It is dangerous having it hooked up without somekind of a safety switch. I stopped along side the road and put the emergency brake on like I normally would, put it in first and then autostarted it. It started right up and kept on chugging until I stopped it. Not good!

When I bought my SHO, I traded in my 98 Neon R/T MTX which had a remote start on it. I installed it so it would only work with the parking brake on (usually put it in neutral if I was going to use the e-brake). Well, I heard through a freind that after I traded it in, a saleman went to go show it to a customer and had a little problem. Whoever parked the car last left it in gear and put the parking brake on. The saleman went to go unlock the doors with the remote and instead hit the remote start button. The Neon drove itself straight forward into a Lexus ES300! Glad no one was hurt. But that dealership gave me such a problem when my SHO needed tranny work under warranty (before this happened), that I'm glad they screwed themselves with that little mishap. So word of advise on remote starts on manual cars: make sure that there's some way that the car can only be in neutral in order to start, or you're just asking for it.

Damn, wish you had that camera...

Did I mention it wasn't recommended for very obvious reasons?

The systems set up for MTXs will work, they do require the extra work as described by marlonius and cd57078.

I have seen professional installers utilize mercury switches on the shifter. The shifter has to be in a straight upright position (N) in order for the remote start to energize.

Has anyone ever seen a shifter position switch that is mounted to the transmission end of the cable? I have an '89 SHO service manual that shows such a switch (basic # 7L238). If anyone else has the same manual, the pic is on page 16-37-49. I work at a Ford dealer, so I had our partsman look it up for me - obselete (big surprise). Just wondering if these cars ever came with a switch or if it was a misprint in the manual. Maybe avialable on a Tempo or ******? I too was thinking of installing a remote starter but I'm scared that it may start in gear . I would not think about installing one if it relied on the driver leaving the shifter in neutral - it only takes one time...

Here's my idea I've considered:

Buy a starter with a lifetime warranty, as it may suffer some extra load, as might other parts over time. Remove the clutch interlock switch, so the car can be started with the clutch up. Leave the car in neutral with the e-brake on, and it seems like an auto-only remote starter should work. I'm not positive if this would work, as there may be some other factor involved. Let me know if there is.
