As you all know monday morning after having my SHO running nicely the day before my timing belt tensioner flew off going 70MPH on the highway. Well I found the tensioner that flew off and of course the spring with a shaped hook end that goes ont the tensioner itself was not present.

I ordered the new tensioner from FPN and thought that this small spring would come with the tensioner as one piece, but as I found out it did not come in at all with the tensioner. Torrie tells me that this is sepearte and gave me this diagram to look for it:

I cant find the spring itself on that diagram, and I was curious since the timing belt just flew off melting my timing belt cover at 70MPH what else could of broken while the tensioner wiggled itself loose and flew from under my car(did I mention it hit a 2002 Dakota behind me shoot )

Only other things I could point out on that diagram that could have bent/broken while the tensioner flew out is these parts:

-6K289
-6L273
-90179-105 (maybe)

Looks to me the 6L273 is the spring that holds the tension for the tensioner. I would recommend the 6K289 mounting stud and 90179-10569 nut if yours is bent or threads stipped.

Ok sounds right I just sent the P/N to Torrie for a quote and I wil find out tommorrow if my local Ford dealer has one of those parts in stock.

I doubt my stud is bent but with my luck its always the worst case scenrio with the SHO so might as well be prepared with everything for the job to be done right, and hopefully it doesnt fly out this time even when TQed correctly like last time.

Awww crap i'm screwed all the parts the you listed above and inquired about to Torrie have all been discontinued.

Does anyone on here have these parts somewhere in the garage or as a spare? Please email me at mailto:[email protected][email protected]</a>.

BTW can the timing belt tensioner be removed w/o removing the crank pulley if there is no timing belt present? Or does anything else have to be done other than removing the plastic timing belt covers? And how can the stud be removed to where ever it is secured to?

sunny San Juan Bautista,
The stud can be removed by using two identical nuts of the type that will screw on there. Screw one nut on there, then screw the second nut on there until it is snug with the first nut. Then take an open ended wrench (or better yet a box end that you put on before screwing the first nut on) and rotate the first nut counter-clockwise. Make sure you've sprayed the stud with PB Blaster where it goes into the block. The stud should come right out.

The dampener has to be removed. I beat the snot out of one dampener to make a relief big enough to get the tensioner off one of my 3.0L blocks once. Too bad, too - Gary pulled the "stuck" crank bolt right out after doing his drilling magic.

Fred I was asking because I believe at my bro's High School there is a low mileage 3.0L SHO motor in there storage shed which I'll tell him to basically strip tommorrow.

So even with everything exposed the dampner has to be moved somehow? I have to let him know as much as possible so he can do it quickly during his shop periods in school.

Should I worry about the spring having close to 100K? Because my last one flew out at 123,000miles so I would think this older/used one might not have enough tension and may loosen itself again.

BTW where can I buy a crank pulley puller so I can do the work myself one of these because I beleive Erik wont be able to make it and I kind of want my SHO revving ASAP.

You can use one for free with AutoZone's loan-a-tool. You just have to leave a $15 deposit. It has the correct bolts for the crank pulley. If you need to pull the timing sprocket you can use two of the long timing belt cover bolts.

You can buy one at any autoparts store or Sears. AutoZone has them in their loan-a-tool program. Put a deposit on the credit card and refund/no charge when returned. I think you can probably buy one for around $20-25.

Can the new timing belt tensioner be used without the said spring above?

Not only no, but.... The spring is the device that sets the required tension on the belt before the tensioner is locked in place. Don't do it or you will loose your timing belt alignment again.

Just to clear a few things up for myself, conter-clockwise is how you lock the tensioner in place after tightening the 14mm nut right?

Also where would I be able to look up the measurements for the stud the goes into the block for the ternsioner? Because if I at least knew the measurements I could have a few made.
