Actually they are those powder cast rods. I know a guy with a Marauder that bent 7 of these type rods and only had a slight ticking as the rod scraped against the crank counter balance weights.

If you say it can be done, well, I guess it can. You bent a forged steel rod and you don't think anything else is harmed?

Tom

well im not sayin ther aint anything else wrong and im not saying for sure it can be done but i guess ill be the first to rebuild this motor huh?:laugh_ti: but i dont know y it bent but that when the cams failed they did smake the pistons i know this for sure but then i got the heads all reworked and put it together not knowing a connecting rod could have bent( i was new to these cars then) and put it 2gether and ran it about 5,000 miles and ther went a bearing while ripping on the car hard. im just look for options to what people think and if some one can prove that it dont work then fine i wont even try but if no one really knows for sure.

now do you guys think it could be done.
I never said it couldn't be done. I said it wasn't economically feasible.

I've personally rebuilt probably more V8 SHO motors than anyone else on this forum (somewhere around 200 of them). Every time a spun bearing motor is encountered, it's thrown away. It is far more economical (and prudent) to replace a spun bearing motor for a variety of reasons. For starters, the bearing spun for a reason. I don't see that you've identified the reason the bearing spun yet. Just replacing a crank, rod, piston, head, and bearings doesn't mean that you're not going to spin another bearing in another 500 miles.

And of course with the select fit pistons you have to not only make sure the right piston is used, but that the sleeve for that cylinder is true and round.

Then there is the head that took the beating from the piston with the spun bearing, which I wouldn't have any confidence in that head ever seating properly around the fire ring again.

But, you're obviously a lot smarter than the rest of us, so you probably don't even need to ask us any more questions about this project of yours.

Best of luck! :thumb:

ok im not tryin to say im smarter no one knows every thing.......
but i don't know why connecting rod bent besides the valves smacking it 2-3months early with the cam failure.
im just not getting why you would junk such a rare motor cuz it spun the bearing.remenber this car only has 96,000 ,miles and about 92,000miles when cams failed.

with the cam fail makin me think the connecting rod bent now makes me think when i was racing the motor and ragging on the car made the bearing spin.and then soon as i knew it happen 3 sec later coasting shut the motor down and towed it home witch was 1 mile away....

so.... i mean this just dont make sence why it is so hard to do this or why ther is such a big deal.....

The bolts and gaskets cost nearly a grand if not more.

WHICH with that knowledge, I would just go find another complete motor from a wrecked car.

not when you uncle is good with the ford dealer and you get 20% off and at cost at the local parts store.

i priced it around $500 in parts and gaskets cuz i can get a hole gasket kit for the sho for $250 and bearings for about $200 off this one site. and about 50$ for my crank to be ground/polished(what ever it needs)

Parts List For One Head

Here is a list of parts that I may use when I work on my car this summer:

(2) Upper Intake Manifold Gasket - F6DZ-9439-B - $37.60 ea.
(2) Lower Intake Manifold Gasket - F6DZ-9439-A - $12.39 ea.
(1) Center Timing Chain Cover Gasket - F6DZ-6020-CA - $13.18
(1) RH Timing Chain Cover Gasket - F6DZ-6020-AA - $12.27
(1) LH Timing Chain Cover Gasket - F6DZ-6020-BA - $12.27
(1) Timing Chain Cover Crank Seal - F5AZ-6700-A - $7.70
(1) Rear/Right Head Gasket - F6DZ-6051-CA - $171.17
(10) Head Bolt - F6DZ-6065-BA -$3.08 ea.
(10) Head Bolt Washers - F6DZ-6L015-AA - $3.03
(1) Rear Exhaust Man. Gasket - F6DZ-9448-K7B - $19.53
(1) Left Hand Valve Cover Gasket - F6DZ-6584-CA – $29.42
(1) Right Hand Valve Cover Gasket - F6DZ-6584-BA - $30.86
(8) Cylinder Head Cover Gaskets – F6DZ-6F048-AA - $5.56 ea.
(2) Cylinder Head Cover Gaskets – F6DZ-6F048-BA - $5.47 ea.
(2) 3/8” Fuel Line Connection o-rings/Seal 5/16 X .07 - 390846-S96 - $1.64
(2) 1/2” Fuel Line Connection o-rings/Seal 7/16 X .07 - 390847-S96 - $1.38
(16) Fuel Injector O-Ring – F6DZ-9229-A – $1.03

Total cost about $500. I will replace alot of other things while I have it taken apart. The est. so far is about $1200 including the parts listed. So I bought the car for $900 and sink all these parts into it. I get a 1997 SF SHO for a little less than I could have bought it used. Its a good thing I like SHOs.

You didn't mention ANY of the lower girdle bolts. You fixed the upper engine part that was damaged - He wants to "Rebuild" the motor, which involves pulling the crank too. Don't forget the connecting rod bolts too. All these bolts are single use.
I forget now how much we spent on just bolts for Uncle Lar's SW9 rebuild, but it was preposterous.
Yes, it was a bearing failure motor. Yes, we swapped the damaged crank too. We basically slapped the best pieces off three motors to make one good one.

Yes, you CAN do it. Yes, it's a near senseless waste of money. Get a used mill and spend your Benji's on upgrades instead.
But then that has been said once or twice already.

Okay, I am sure he didn't realize that those 20+ girdle bolts and the 16 rod cap bolts no to mention the 20 headl bolts ALL have to be replaced. Though the fact he got away from the dealer with head gaskets for less then the standard $180 each migh mean he'll ay less then the $3.50 for each of them damn bolts.
Personally, if I had time to **** I would just go ahead and rebuild mine but finding those brand new crate short blocks for $750 on E-bay sure made more sense but I still out the head bolts and gaskets. Sure feels better knowing all the bottom end is new though.

As in both gaskets or each? We need the hook-up on that line. Most all of the parts stores I went to down here said they couldn't supply head gaskets for the 3.4 much less for under $180 each. Finally got them at a local stealer who's parts manager gets me the wholesale price at least.

and that would be each is the 180 for both??? if so then damn thats a steal.......

i cant just call them up and order tons and tons and they take a bit to get them shipped in it might have been $130 but idk its still a steal. getting these kind of discounts i be leave i can do this sho for at least $500-1000 at max...

i own a thunderbird sc also i didnt full head gasket rebuild ( you know thos 3.8 motors lol that are known for h/g's) for under $400 heads resurfaced/tested for leaks and all new upper gaskets and the head bolts . but i did the work
