I grab the verrrry top of the strut's rod with visegrips wrapped in bike tire. That part of the rod never comes in contact with the strut's seals and the bike tire provides plenty of cushion and grip to get the top nut to spec without marring the shaft.

I use a 1/4" drive 10mm (I think?) socket on the shaft, either inside a spark plug socket or with an adjustable wrench on the nut.

You can undo the spring compressors slightly so the spring is making firmer contact with the mounts, giving the rod a little pressure to stop the crazy spinning. Make sure the nut is threaded on as much as you can by hand, and don't undo the compressor all the way.
