Rear diff cover drain plug

Been working on a little project here it is.

OK here is an update on my drain plug project. I drilled a 3/8 hole and reamed it out some so the bolt would fit thru easy. Then installed the bolt thru the back side of the cover outwards so I could thread the nut down onto the cover to hold it in place so I could welded it in place. Yes please, don't laugh to hard, my welding is very bad. I welded the nut onto the cover and then removed the bolt that was holding it in place. I saw this concept on an episode of one of the Powernation Tv shows. The bolt I used will be trimmed shorter so that it just barely goes past the cover as not to interfere with anything. I need to paint and finish couple other detail, but this is what I got so far.

Installed shortened drain plug and doing a leak test right now, will report in couple days.

I like your thinking. Wonder if anyone sells an aftermarket cover with a drain plug..

Nope, that's why I'm making one.

Well here the finished product. I used a little JB Weld just to help it look little better. I took the cover to work and put some thin oil we use on the presses and NO LEAKS!, YEAH. So the will be installing the cover this week when the weather gets nicer.

Did you put some kind of gasket under the bolt head?
Normal threads are not like pipe threads they will seep oil.

Yes, I used Permatex thread sealant and a cooper washer I had extra from doing brakes.

New modded cover was installed this past Tuesday. Took about an hours to swap out due to being tight under there and loosening up the exhaust to get more access. Report so far is no leaks, nice and dry.
