rear cam seal

I did a search on this. question- is this a hard job to do and will new seal stop leak? it looks real tight down there. I have a very small leak however when it does drip, it drips right onto the exhaust. with the heater on, I get that burnt oil smell in the car. I've felt underneath seal, it's wet with oil. valve cover gaskets have been changed and is all dry back there. this is for the 93 ATX. I got rid of the 92. with 200K, the clutch let go. plus it needed other work which would have cost way too much to fix.

i have a 94 mtx with the exact same problem.. ive been told its not that hard but i have no idea how hard it really is because i havent gotten around to doing mine and its seems to be getting worse and worse as i drive it ... maybe ken or sho amo will reply they have alot more experance with shos then myself so maybe we could both get a little help on how to do the rear cam seal. i think when i finally get around to changing mine ill try to make some form of write up of how i did it and maybe down the road other people will edit it and figure out a way to make it a little easier.

It's time consuming, however, it's doable.

It won't stop a transmission leak, however, if the problem is a worn seal, it could fix it.

The cam sensor doesn't seal anything.

While we're doing your shims, it would be the time to replace it. The front end doesn't have to come apart for the rear one, however, with the other stuff removed up top, it will make it MUCH easier. ****, I can even take off the cam cap for this.

what all has to be done to do the rear or even the front cam seal? would the cam have to be removed or would the cap just have to come off and replace the seal there? cuz if the cam has to be taken out or moved around in anyway then i probably wont ever both with doing the cam seal and just let it smoke.. yea the smell is pretty bad but i can live with that.

I though the Cam sensor had a seal.. My bad!! Well, when we do shims, can we do that as well.. Its driving me NUTS. A quart every 2 weeks or so..

well mines not that bad... i havent had to add oil to mine yet i do know that i need some power steering fluid... and i really dont have the time or the money to worry about fixing anything else but the starter right now cuz its getting pretty sad having to roll start my car..

For the rear, you can get to it by just taking off the cam sensor and moving the engine damper. It's a very tight fit. If you want to take the intake and valve cover off, you can take the cam cap off to make access easier.

For the other two, you have to take off the timing cover, timing belt, cam gears and inner timing cover before you can get to the seals. No, the cams do not have to come out.

what's the cam cap? is that the upper timing belt cover? would you be able to change this seal from up top or thru the inner fender? I might use a quart every 1,200 miles, it's just the smell and the occasional smoke that's annoying.

Jason, he's ATX so no damper to worry about AND the seal is easier to get to on ATXs than it is on MTXs because the engine sits farther forward.

A "cam cap" is what holds the cam against the head. It's not part of this discussion and was mistakenly mentioned earlier. The front cam cap DOES hold the cam seal, but you don't remove it to get to the seal...you CAN...but that crazy talk.

Here's a shot of the front. The cam cap is what hold the cams down. The caps on the ends are external to the engine (mostly) and they are what hold the seal.

You can see the rear (in car) cam cap were the cam sensor attaches on the bottom right of this picture.

Here is a picture of all three seals (cam sensor covers one).

The front cam cap DOES hold the cam seal, but you don't remove it to get to the seal...you CAN...but that crazy talk.

It makes it MUCH easier. BTDT.

I know my luck, I'll drill right thru the seal and hit the head causing a leak forever. I'm assuming there's 2 screws that hold the cap on. once I remove the cam sensor and valve cover, where are these cam cap screws? is the cam sensor and cam housing 2 different pieces?

Two screws... You can see 1.5 of the in the lower right of this picture (mine are actuall nuts as I have installed studs).

Yes, the cam sensor comes off with two 5.5mm bolts and the cap has two 10mm bolts.

ok, thanks. the pictures were a big help. I changed the valve cover gaskets 20,000 miles ago. hopefully, I can re-use them.
