Rear cam seal.......

so check this. a couple of months ago, my brother and i replaced the rear cam seal where the cam sensor goes. To get out the seals, we would punch a hole through the seal with an awl. Then we would screw into the seal with a screw. Then pull the seal out. Well while screwing into the seal, we accidentally screwed a little into the cam. it scored the cam a little. we tried sanding it down the best we could. we put it back together and i was leaking a quart every 400 miles or so. all because of that stupid seal. So we tore it apart last week and decided to take a look at it. we sanded it down and it felt great to the touch. we put it back together and it's still leaking a lot. is there anything i can do besides buying a new cam? could i put a second seal in there somehow or a wider seal? it sucks because the scrath is just where the seal rests so if i could get a wider or second seal in there, it would be great. please help me out.

The damage was done. The finish on the camshaft where it meets the seal must be almost mirror smooth. Unless you are using finer than 1000 grit sandpaper, you are creating a roughened surface for the rubber seal. This rough surface will quickly eat away the rubber and result in the leaking problem you currently have. Because the access to that area is so tight (without removing the cam bearing), it would be very difficult to properly finish the surface. Sorry to hear about your situation.

What happens if i were to grind down that metal plate that goes into the cam shaft which the cam sensor bolts onto? Like grind down the inside of it so i could fit another seal in there. Do you think this might work??
