Ok, I redid my rear brakes 15k ago and now they need attention again. 15k ago I put in rebuilt calipers, new brackets (new slider pins), new rear hoses, and bleed out the entire system for the first time in its life (it was at 155k). So, now I take it all apart and on my passenger side brake pads have worn significantly unevenly. Here are some pics - what would cause the wear like this to happen? The pictures show the outer pad having barely any material left on it and the inner pad having about half.....

Upon inspection one of the boots for one of the slider pins had come off - so the seal wasn't perfect - but the pin still moves freely. That is the only evidence I could find that was problematic...would that cause this? I don't want to replace the pads and have this happen again...so what action do I need to take here?

Thanx, guys.

do you have bias plugs?

No. I have the '96 upgrade though.

Here is a new piece of info. I just compressed the piston on the rear passenger side and as I spun the piston around fluid started to seep out from between the rubber seal (the one around the piston) and the piston. It was a 'rust' color - where all the brake fluid in the MC is clean and clear. Would this indicate a bad caliper? I assume that it is brake fluid coming out which isn't supposed to happen? Once I stopped spinning the piston back in the fluid stopped seeping out. So, my thought it that because the pressure was high spinning the piston back in it caused it to leak - however, under no circumstances should it leak - (right?). So, should I get a warranty replacement caliper?

I'm having the same problem with the same corner of my 91 Plus. I've had to change my rear brakes now three times in the last year and a half...the rear drivers side is barely worn, but the pass side has ONE pad that is almost worn to the metal. I put on a brand new caliper less than a year ago (the second rear pad change), and the problem persisted. I noticed when I changed the caliper, there was the rust colored brake fluid in the line on that side. I completly bled the system at all four corners....when I changed the pads three weeks ago, that fluid was rusty again...what's doing this?

I'm not sure, but I would sure like to know. I wonder if it has anything to do with the proportioning valve...

I think the problem lies with the poor quality of rebuilt calipers.

Another variable was brought to my attention on the Taurus Car Club Forums... I'm still using the same sliding pins that came on the car when I got it in 99. They rusted up a bit on me a few years ago, but I cleaned them up, sanded some of the rust off, cleaned out the hole, relubed the combo, and reinstalled the pins. This past time, I had to do the same thing...maybe they're PARTLY the culprit. I know they won't create the rusty fluid.

The isn't seal good enough to prevent all rust or corrosion with the slider pins. The rubber boot and **** do a good job of keeping it working over a period of time, but '99 was a long time ago for these parts. You can get new sliders for relatively cheap and some of the aftermarket brackets (like the ones from Dana) have new pins and rubber boots included for short money.
