I was wondering how to get to the rear bank of spark plugs. Do you have to take off the intake manifold? That is about the only way I can see. I am new to these cars and there is no haines manual on them at any store near here.

Forget the Haynes manual get the Ford Manual on CD.

Do a search on e-bay for the following:

97 TAURUS SHO v8 ENGINE SERVICE MANUAL CD FREE SHIP

$8.99 shipped!!!

One trick to get the intake off is to loosen both sides of all the runner hose clamps. When they are all lose and the mounting bolts are removed, just push on hard. Rock it back and forth it will break free.

I cant get the surge tank off. I took off the front 2 brackets the side bracket, and the two bolts in the back near the top. Is there anything missing?

if all of the obvious attachment points are good to go then I would say that you need to leverage it a little, the foam between it and the valve cover might be semi melted and sticking it together

Two EGR Bolts, several vacuum/sensors connections on the back of the plenum, and all the runner coupling clamps (at least one at each coupling).

OH and you will need to loosen the lower two bolts (one each) on the rear plenum strut brackets to allow them to swing out of the way and allow the tank to move aft then up and out.

You need:

Sockets
8, 10, 12 mm

Combination wrenches

10, 12 mm

Standard Screwdriver

Pliars

DSCN0843

Left side surge tank bracket bolt
DSCN0844

Right side surge tank bracket bolt
DSCN0847

DSCN0853

And 2-3 hours if it's your first time tearing it apart. Don't lose the metal gasket that is behind the egr.

Ughh... I get to tear this off again in the next few months and replace coil # 1 when it starts acting up more.

Take the surge tank off with the runners attached. That way you don't have to mess with the intake gaskets. This usually takes me about 15 minutes......

But I have several things removed permanently. I also will take the cowling off every time too. Makes it much easier and it is only a few screws.

If you permanently remove the EGR system and all related components it makes the surge tank removal and reinstallation much easier. It does require a tune, though - Paul can help you out there.

Paul, I think next time you come over or I go down to your place we need to have a surge tank removal challenge. I think I could take you old man...

Like Paul said, take the surge tank out with the runners as one piece. When I removed mine to change the plugs, I found that the intake was still really tight together (this was with everything loose and removed that need to be), I took a short peice of wood and a rubber mallet and tapped lightly around the intake until it finally broke free. I don't think it had ever been apart before.

I guess I'll try that next time

I like to take it all apart and clean it out.

You can still clean it out if you need to. Since using the condensation can there is seldom anything in mine to clean out. A quick rinse with brake cleaner will get it looking clean. :)

Who, you or me? We've both had problems with that before.

Dad dropped a red straw from the carb cleaner can into one of my cylinders. Some creative thinking with a piece of wire made into a hook pulled it out the spark plug hole.

Got lucky on that one.

Didn't someone here drop one of the metal grommets for the vanity cover down their intake? :oogle:
