After many trials and tribulations I am finally ready to install an exhaust system on my SHO. This will likely be my final mod and I wanted to get some advice from the forum on which route to take. I am thinking full custom mandrel bent 3 or 2.5 setup starting with the y pipe, or I could wait for 15 buyers to order ATX y pipes from sho source and add the Shosource ypipe to a dynomax catback. Please suggest ideas for design, expected cost and how much hp gains I could expect with each of these?

Many Thanks!!!;)

2.5" than y'd into 2" in the rear,or a single exit 2.5" catback. 3" is way too big

OK so you are saying go with a custom job over the SHO Source Y Pipe and Duynomax catback. Does anyone have any idea what type of gains to expect from each setup with the mods I curently have in place>? And does every one agree with Warmonger?
Thanks!

get a custom Y pipe if you are looking for max power.
the aftermarket y pipes have a very poor collector design.

Yeah, I was thinking custom was the best way to go, thanks for the input. Lets see if others may disagree?

I am trying to determine a couple of things to be an informed consumer:

A) what ballpark gains are seen with:

1. A SHO Source Catted Y pipe + a dynomax catback system
2. A custom setup as was described in the earlier post

B)what is the relative cost on the following including installation:

1. A SHO Source Catted Y pipe + a dynomax catback system
2. A custom setup as was described in the earlier post

I am undecided as yet and am looking for more info,
If anyone could elaborate on the above, I would appreciate hearing folks 2cents.

Also I can give a positive review of the SHO Source Acid porting and BBB service, (I'll repost this in product feedback) after learning to correctly install the acid ported & BBB intake I am very happy :). Plan on getting the vaccume hose set and maybe underdrive pully next.

For the MTX there is a 11hp gain. No one has dyno tested a custom setup to be any better on a N/A system.

Cost wise, ours will bolt right up, in fact you can do it on your own. The other will cost a bit more in materials, bending, welding etc...

Two questions:

How soon will SHO Source get the ATX into production, is it still a long way off?

I quote from the SHO Performance Level I GBC bound copy I own written in 1994 by T.A. Breaux " A SHO with nothing more than a changeover to the Custom type exhaust system typically experiences an increase of roughly 35BHP, for a total 255BHP" has anyone disproven this for a custom setup on a dyno?

I've been quoted "Starting @ $1000" by a good local mandrel bent shop with three pipebenders although would rather just keep it simple, though if 35BHP is possible I may just have to lay out a little extra for more horses.

Thanks for your input, love these cars

Wow, that expensive?

Wouldn't it be a lot cheaper to do some measuring, and buy some mandrel bent elbows, then weld them to straight piping? I'm sure you could get a darn good fit if you take your time.

It all depends on the orders we get. My guess around a month but could be a couple weeks. We just need more support.

I haven't seen anyone duplicate that sort of gains from exhaust. The best I have seen is with headers and y-pipe and that is around 25hp.

The exhaust system he described might of been a dual system but it will take a good amount of work.

honestly the SHO Source pipes give you a good base for a custom setup.its a nice design up untill the collector merge. a good exhaust shop should be able to fix the merge and fit it up to your catback for alot less than a whole custom Y-pipe can be had for. there is a few old timers around here that have custom y-pipes and have reported good results.

I bought the magnaflow y-pipe, it looks to flow a lot better than the stock MTX piece although I bought it as a replacement not an upgrade. I added a 2.5" inch single exhaust at the same time. Car pulls much harder at high rpms but may have lost some low-end torque (just enough that I wonder if it did...) it changed the feel a bit, a little less grocery-getter but needs more RPM to take advantage. Overall I'm happy with it and would do it again for sure. Cost less than $400 for the 22" resonator, flowmaster muffler, parts and labor. The y pipe was additional but the installation cost was included in the $375 the exhaust bill. I'm happy considering heavy-gauge tubing was used and custom mandrel bent to minimize twists and turns, done by a local guy in one afternoon.

I would not even consider a 3" exhaust...I imagine the low end would suffer and I doubt there is much more power without a bunch of mods or a 3.2L mtx swap.

I'm curious to see what people have to say about exhaust systems. I'm considering getting either a.) Custom Exhaust setup or b.) a used Borla if I can find any.

Don't mean to hi-jack the thread but since my exhaust needs replacement anyways I'll be looking into this.

I've heard good things about the dynomax (power wise) and bad things (not stainless), but I'm looking for something on a $600 budget in the future.

I have a SHO Shop Y-pipe (catted, not equal length), and I'd like to get an exhaust that gives me performance and sounds great.

I just got done building the rear half for mine. 2.5" mandrel bends, cut and welded to make the shape, rather than have one built. The closest mandrel bender to me is 4 hours, and the cost is rediculous.

I figure, I have a welder, a chop saw, and a grinder.

For under $250, I'll have a full exhaust built.

The rear half took about 7 hours to cut, grind, and weld together. All in a two stall garage, on floor jacks. I just tack welded everything together to make fitment correct, then I welded it all together.

If I had pics, I'd post them. Next time I get it up on the lift, I'l try and get some.

the sho source y-pipe is awesome, if you have a power hammer it will take you 30 minutes tops..super easy

Remember that the only cat back exhaust we can buy is the Dynomax. At least we still have this option.
