I am assuming (I know, that's bad) RDU stands for "rear differential unit" am I correct?

Thanks for the knowledge

Coming from a 2005 Jetta TDI that I bought new and drove 500,000 miles.

PP: Performance Package
PTU: Power Transfer Unit
RDU: Rear Differential Unit

RDU is the ATC (active torque coupling clutch) and rear differential in one assembly. The ATC is what was circled above. The clutch is internal to the housing. This clutch is what transfers torque to the rear pinion from the drive shaft. The clutch has some normal drag that will spin the rear wheels even when not commanded to lock up.

The ATC clutch is controlled by an all wheel drive module. It's a fancy [read more expenside] relay that controls the clutch. This relay is controlled by the pcm.

The PTU is a 90 degree gear box. It is splines to the carrier of the front differential. The right half shaft passes through the PTU and is splines to the spider/side gears in the front differential carrier.
