So sorry to see this happen, BigB, hope you are OK! Hope the damage looks worse than it is, I think tho the total would easily be in the $6-7K range. Maybe you can get an exhaust system upgrade out of it :) Good luck, hope it gets fixed up pronto!

Yeah everyone is fine.
Wife and 2yr old were driving it when it happened.

Body shop didn't seem to think it's totaled but won't know until they start tearing into it.
The back door won't close so frame might be jacked.

OMG, my apology. Glad they are ok, I'm sure your heart about stopped when you got that call. Did the police tell you anything about the other driver. I'm sure you wanted to beat the crap out of them for almost hurting your wife and child.

Yeah def not the call you want to get. Wife was pretty upset but ok, she was worried she did something wrong.

He was ticketed for blowing the stop sign, it was a commercial van, so who knows what the company is actually going to do.

He apologized and said he wasn't familiar with the area, this set me off, Stop signs are the same in all 50 states.

The cop had to tell me to calm down at that point.

Wife and 2yr old were driving it when it happened.

Whoa! The 2yr old was driving too?

Holy **** now that's advanced skills right there!

But in all seriousness, truly sorry to see such carnage. But glad to hear the car did it's job, & protected your loved ones accordingly.

Me myself, repairs or not, I wouldn't keep it. Get yourself a 2016MY to replace it.

Good luck.

My nephew was a pretty good navigator at 2 yrs of age, now all gone to c*** :) So I'm assuming his son is a backseat "driver" as well!

A friend of mine was hit by a dump truck in his 2013 Ford Explorer, which is built on the same platform as the Taurus. He walked away but the Explorer looked like a mangled mess. Its amazing the engineering that goes into these vehicles to deform and spread all the energy of an impact to anywhere but the occupants. Glad everyone is ok.

DAmm BPD You beat me to it....I was going to reference the 2 y/o driving.......curse you.

BigB Glad family is O.K. I would almost certainly call it totaled depending on where the internal structural uni body damage is. Trunk looks O.K. Stop sign running was most likely cross traffic...good thing I was a tail section strike and not a full center T Bone.

Which brings me to another point. A little safety pet peeve of mine and no judgment of parenting skills but something to strongly consider.

For parents this may seem weird but might I recommend placing the car seat in the center of the rear seat. This is a perfect example of close and lucky. It may seem counter intuitive and may take a couple of extra minutes during putting Tommy and or Sally in the car seat but if this was a T Bone at the rear doors, placing in the center of the car could give the extra few inches and possibly more room for the airbag curtain to expand providing more protection.

MODS and ALL readers.

This is not intended to be critical to be honest I have no idea by the photo whether the child was seated in the center and to be honest I don't want to. If I know one way or the other then that could influence the readers decision.

Parents: Do not answer the question of whether child was centered just consider in the future.

I also consider talking to your car seat manufacturer and even safety organizations. Your local Police Department might be a good starting point.

Glad everyone is ok, please remember to replace the car seat, they are only rated for one accident at this level.

Thanks everyone.

The 2yr old was not driving, she is mounted in the center for this exact reason. (Although she would try if I let her, I will wait until she's 3...)
That car seat will absolutely be replaced.

Initial estimate is $7500, so they wont total it , none of the air bags deployed. Body shop is saying it looks a lot worse than it is , No frame or suspension damage, somehow didn't even hit the exhaust.

It is new enough where all parts will be new OEM.

The shop did say they will know more when the cut the rear quarter off, I will but randomly showing up to see for myself, I don't trust the shops , they only make money if they get to fix it.

Chances are I will never be convinced it is fixed and will get something different.

It was a company van that hit her, so who knows might be able to convince them to buy it, since the driver admitted he was a idiot to the police and Insurance.

Some different angles

The gap on the rear has me concerned, and the big wrinkle in the quarter panel near the door, where the car didn't even get hit
