Very odd, sounds like a problem with the head unit its self. It not really work fixing, ditch it and get eather a replacement one off ebay or an aftermarket one.

Turn the headlights on during the day and see what that does. If it goes quiet, check the ground integrity to the head unit. If the ground wire goes, it will try to ground back through the instrument panel lamps. This is fine as long as you aren't actually using them to light the dash.

don't have that, but we had a problem with the radio and clock lighting at night... that, and our radio only plays to the driver-side speaker, unless some one puts pressure on volume / on/off **** (and keeps it there). we figured out the lighting problem (the wheel to the left of the steering column that adjusts how dim/bright you want your headlights was loose), and can only assume that the volume is because of a loose wire somewhere. frown
