Question: How durable is the original pump and rack in a 118,*** mile Gen II after running dry for about 5 minutes and 1/2 mile?

Rationale: I decided to take the 95’ on an errand run tonight since the weather is pretty nice. About 10 minutes before home (lots of stop lights) and approximately 2.5 miles, I heard a faint whine and smelled a slight “burning oil” smell. The steering felt fine on the last turn to my house, but the whine got a bit louder. Making the final circle to back into the garage, the whine got real loud and the steering wheel vibrated slightly during the maneuver. Immediately after refilling, all problems went away even after cycling the wheel back and forth probably 25 times (to rid air and check for leaks). It did develop a leak tonight, but isn’t “gushing out”.....

Any advice is welcome and thanks in advance.

When my rack seal blew, I ran it dry for several minutes to get it to a parts store. I refilled it with fluid and continued the 17 miles to home. It leaked all out again on the way home and was completely dry for at least another few minutes. Mine was a major leak - "gushing," if you will.

That was about 15 months ago. Still have original PS pump (knock on wood). No indications of problems.

One data point.

That's good to hear. The only reason I'm so worried is that my better half ruined a rack in a Gen III SLO after 20 miles of running dry. She claims the stiff steering feel came all at once but she drove it to work (apx. 20 miles) before calling me. She isn't real attentitive, however, so for all I know, it was whining like crazy for a month before this happened. Thanks for the input. :thumb:

I ran my 89 dry by accident this summer when the return hose decided to lie down on the PS pump belt.

Fixed hose, refilled and purged system, and have been running the car regularly with no indication (yet) of any problems.

Good - I'm starting to feel a little better about this now. Thanks for the input. :thumb:
