I remember several good threads about replacing the rack and pinion in the SHOs. I have looked in the search menu and can't fine the ones I have in mind. I think SDPATT had some good tips. Could someone please point me to any good directions or tips for this.

I have a 1992 and don't beleive it has VAPS. I would also be glad to a hear any part numbers or suggestion on where to get the rack and pinion. I hope this is not in the wrong forum. Maybe it should be in the suspension one?

Thanks,

Trent

Scott posted some good info about his experience that I used when I replaced my rack back in May.

I passed on some tips in this post: http://www.shoforum.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=19;t=000720#000002

After reconsidering the job and having replaced my SFBs this fall, I would drop the rear of the rack to get some more room in the event I ever do this job again. Hope I don't need to, it's messy and dirty. PS fluid dripping in the face isn't much fun.

Suspension forum would be a good home for this thread. Moderators will likely move it when they get around to it.

or you could do it like I did.

Spin your bearings..buy a new engine with 1/4 the miles. Take your old one out.

Now you have all the room in th world to change your rack. You can actually get right in the bay to do that ultra hard steering bolt.

(which even with no motor in took me 1/2 hour out of the 1 hour for the whole job)

Searches seem to be pointless, now! Everytime you get to one, it's a link to another and that one links you to the home page of shoforum!

Unfortunately, what you are seeing is the result of a vBulletin software upgrade that was performed several years ago. The links to posts created under the old version no longer exist in the new version so the software automatically redirects you to the forum homepage.

It also appears that some of the older posts are no longer in the system or are inaccessable to the SEARCH function. Bummer..

I take it thats why my steering feels so "light" to the touch (for lack of better term) and seems to tighten up ~25/30 mph or so....

After removeing the boot in the floorboard and takeing the bolt out of the column that holds the column on the rack. I put a jack under the rear of the rack and slowly dropped it about 2 or 3 inches removed the lines and the 2 bolts that hold the rack in, nuts off of the tie-rod end and knocked it out of the spindle, then removed the rack from the drivers side. Didn't have to remove anything else to get it out.

BTW: I did jack the car up and remove the front wheels before I dropped the subframe.
