What real difference do performance tires make to cornering and acceleration? Which are the best ones to buy?

Note: these are for the street...

The performance tires make a big difference. And I think the best tires if your not worried about money are the BF Goodrich g-force T/A KD's. They are $190 a tire and get good performance. And they last long compared to a competition tire. They have a 200 treadwear ration as compared to thge hoosies race slicks which have a treadwear rating of 80. That is a big difference. But if you dont want to spend much money the best bang for the buck is probably the Sumitomo HRT+'s at a price of $88 they give you great performance. Also you can look at the Dunlop Sp spot A2's they are great too.

If price is not an issue than i agree with Kaotic...however is price is an issue, for the street you cant go wrong with Falken GRB FK-451's about 100 bucks a pop for 225/45/17's and cheaper than that for 16 inch wheels

What would you rate Yokohama AVS Sport tires as, more street or track?

I gotta agree with NJ about the Falken's. The set I have on my 18" wheels have a ridiculus level of grip, and they ware pretty good with a 280 rating. Later.

I have driven on the tires that I mentioned including the new "bad a$$" BF Goodrich's and from my viewpoint they still get beat by the Bridgestone's. Tirerack comparisons must be taken with a grain of salt.

RI, the Yokohama AVS Sports are what I have on my supercharged car. They grip well, but the Bridgestone's are just a little better, they seem sharper on turn-in and they don't wander like the Yoko's do on some pavement. Also, they are better in the rain. As long as you don't put "Armor-all" all over the tread. wink

Grassroots motorsports just did a tire comparo. I believe they finished in this order:

1. BF Goodrich KD
2. Falken Azenis (they aren't sold in common SHO sizes however)
3. Everything else

They did NOT test the SO-3s, however, but I'm sure they would compare favorably among the top two.

The new Kumho ECSTA MX is supposed to be great, too, as is the Michelin Club Sport.

Real race tires are in a whole different league (ECSTA V700 + Victoracer, BFG R1, Hoosiers, etc)

I subscribe to Grassroots as well, but I am not buying their take on tires. Of course, that is just my opinion. As for racing/autocross tires I prefer the Toyo Proxes RA-1.

As far as the Michelin, they are not what they used to be. I go through a lot of different tires with all of the vehicles that I own. I have learned the hard way to not believe everything that I read in magazines.

I haven't ever heard of the FK451. Is it new?

Looking over the SoloII nats results, it seems like there's a pretty even split between the Azenis, the SO-3 and the KD. That, plus the GRM article, suggests to me that those are pretty solid tire choices for street class autocrossing.

The only reason I bring up the Michelin is becuase my friend in industry (not Michelin affiliated) said they were supposed to kick major butt. The ECSTA MX is Kumho's new Max performance tire. Considering how well the ECSTA Supra does at a regional level (not quite in the upper echelon of tires as listed above, but still very good), the MX will be kick butt as well.

FWIW most guys at my region run the Azenis. I run the SO-3s.

I tend to go by what the nationals caliber drivers are running. They truly know best when it comes to street-class autocross tires.

Of course any of the street tires would get their ***** handed to them by a set of Hoosiers.

The full name is the Falken FK451 GR-B(as in beta, not regular B). They are amazing in dry, amazing in rain, even in heavy stuff, and I've never tried then in any thick snow, but they performed nicely in the light stuff we had last winter here in Sohio. They have been around as of early last year I beleive. I got mine on in July and ran them straight through to this June(~12,000 miles). I highly recomend them for street use with occasional track time.
