Is there a common or well heard of reason that the check engine light would just come on and off randomly?
Car in question is a 90.

It will go on for 5 min. Then turn off for another 10.

Cycle repeats itself.

I've cleaned air filter, and reset codes by unplugging negative terminal on battery.

Or is this an issue with many possibilities?

THX

The check engine light is trying to tell you something is wrong. Clearing the codes doesn't solve the problem that's causing the light to come on. Try reading the codes and determining what the problem is so you can correct it and stop the light from coming on.

Go here to learn how to read the codes that were set when the CHECK ENGINE light illuminated. It only takes a short piece of wire and your ignition key. Unplugging the battery does not necessarily clear the codes. You must run the KOEO test and pull the jumper when the codes are being flashed on the CHECK ENGINE light.

There are few errors that don't cause some obvious engine control problem. A failing oxygen sensor is one of the few causes that won't noticeably affect the engine. Don't guess. Read the codes. Or at least take it to AutoZone where hey will read them for free.
