Questions concerning rear wheel bearings and how to replace

I have a light roaring noise coming from the rear(I think) when going above 30mph. I'm going to go outside and check them for play in a while but I want to know from whoever has worked on them how it is back there. Can't you take the rotor off, pry out the grease seal, and pull the inner and outer bearings out? Or is it different? I at least want to check and repack with grease, although the noise could be echoing from the front and sounding like it's coming from the back. Does anyone have a number for the grease seal, I couldn't even pull up a part number for the individual rear bearings on the Autozone website. Later.

I will be replacing my rear brakes sometime during the week, and I'm also interested in learning how fellow SHO owners fared in replacing the rear bearing assemblies.

Anybody? I went and checked for play but everything seemed fine. Are the bearings replaceable or is the bearing pressed into the hub?

The 89's are replaceable, very easy to access much like you discribed. My expierance was that I couldn't find a listing from my sources, so I proceeded to remove them to get the numbers off them, it turns out they are a very common bearing as was the seal, also very inexpensive. I wouldn't waste the time cleaning up your old bearings, just replace them with new ones. wink

A search revealed (apparently 1989 was the only year for replaceable bearings alone) that the bearings are replaced with the hub as an assembly on 199-1995. With that being said, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Well how can tell if a rear bearing is bad, can you do the tire grabbing at the 6 and 12 o'clock and see? Like I said, I get a quiet roar but I can't tell if it's from the front or back. I grabbed my rear tires and did the test but I got no play or looseness. Any input will be appreciated.

Bummer, One more reason I perfer my 89 over the others

A trick I've used to find the location of a noise is to drive next to a cement barrier, bridge ect... and roll down the windows one at a time to verify were the sound is coming from. I've had bearing failure in a 9" ford that gave no sign of problems, (the wobble test) it just started to seized one day on the way to the drag strip. luckly I had a spare set of axles to get me by until I could get a new bearing pressed on. If you have over 120k I would recommend replacing them anyway before you have a failure.
